I went with the PS Vita since it also has compatibility with the PS4. The one trick with getting the most out of the Vita is to pretty much try anything that sounds interesting and just exchange a lot. The 3ds has all the well known titles, while the PS Vita tends to have a few well known titles and a ton of odd ball series and blasts from the past, like Deception IV Blood Ties and the Ys series.

Then again, you could just get both systems. For some reason the 3ds is getting all the SMT games while the Vita is getting the Persona series. I would think it would be the other way around.

thats a tough one, i have a 3DS but i think the PS Vita has better controls, is more powerful and has a better service with PS+, but the 3DS has better games at the moment, also i really appreciate the backwards compatibility, i just found advance wars days or ruin for cheap the other day

tough it should be called edge-vance wars days or ruin now, i hate the new art-style, the story and the animation is overall worse, plus im not convinced of the new CO mechanics, but when it comes to the units and its mechanics in general, its the best AW so far in that aspect

I think both handhelds have some great strengths and weaknesses. I would say get both eventually if you can afford it, as that's what I plan to do (currently own a Vita and really wishing I could play Pokémon, Dream Drop Distance, Theatrhythm, Persona Q when it comes out, ect.), but of course that's not going to be a viable option for most people. So it really depends on what you want from a handheld.

First of all, you mentioned not having a PS3/PS4, but do you own a PS2? A PSP? Because the primary games I find myself playing on my Vita are PS1 classics, PS2 ports like Persona 4 Golden/Final Fantasy X|X-2 and downloadable PSP titles. This is all great and I enjoy taking advantage of this, but by far the biggest thing for me is getting to play these games I missed out on, having never owned a PSP or purchased many PS1/PS2 games when I was younger. I can't imagine it'd be all that worth it for those of you who have had Sony consoles for awhile and don't need another platform to experience them again. The portability of these titles is, of course, a nice thing too.

As far as exclusive games go, the 3DS trumps the Vita any day, hands down. I don't think I've seen anyone argue otherwise and for some people that's the most important factor. Honestly the Vita's biggest downfall is the lack of releases available on it that you can't get anywhere else. However, I have to say I really don't like the design of the original DS; I have a Lite and it's really uncomfortable to hold for even a short amount of time, let alone the hours of gaming that I'd want to put into it. I haven't had much of an opportunity to check it out yet, but I can't imagine the 3DS being that much different. Another negative about the 3DS is that the Nintendo eShop, so I hear, is not as good as the PlayStation Store in terms of what they offer for backwards-compatible games, though even then I don't think it's too big of a deal since the 3DS can play the DS cartridges. The Vita cannot do the same with PSP carts; it's limited to what's available to download on the Store, unfortunately. And it really pisses me off that Crisis Core isn't on there!

I rank the Vita higher as an all-around great device, but if it's just the variety and exclusivity of games you're concerned about, the 3DS is more for you, I'd imagine.

3DS for original games.

PSV for ports/PSN stuff.

It's that easy, at least to me.

I personally got the 3DS since the Vita seems to have more games on it that I want, that I can play elsewhere. Along with the virtual console, there are a number of good RPGs on the 3DS that may (and already) interest you. There are also a lot of games on the 3DS that you just can't play on other consoles in general but that's the nature of Nintendo consoles.

Like what other people have said though, this is your choice. You're putting down the cash, you're going to be playing on the console so, you ultimately must make the choice.

I got both and love them both, but I love the Vita more. Thing's a Persona machine, plus I get to play my ps4 games on break at work. Also, the more playstation systems you have, the bigger a bargain ps+ is, so having them all is great too

I can't help it but I've been getting a lot more mileage out of my Vita than I do from the 3DS. PS+ keeps me stocked up on games and there are a couple of genuine gems around like Tearaway. It is a severely underappreciated and neglected peace of hardware. Shame.

As for the 3DS... I don't know. I'm not a fan of JRPGs, I've had my fun with Pokemon Y, I never even liked Mario in the first place and the new Zelda was a major disappointment. In my case, 3DS is the one gathering dust.

I guess it all boils down to personal taste. I prefer the Vita if only for the fact that all the good games are free with PS+.

i really cant express how annoying it is to hear the same lie over and over again, do you get free electricity when you pay your bills?

and they are rentals at best since you have to keep paying or else your games go away

its a good deal that i admit but lets call things by their name

Just list out the games you wanna play on each system, and count them. The side with higher number, wins.
I got both, but prefer my Vita. Finished every single games I got for it except for one (Toukiden) but it's pretty lengthy.

I understand your point and sure, I pay for the service, and one of the perks of the service is access to games. So the games aren't technically free.

Here's the thing about PS+. I have a PS3. I subscribed to PS+ primarily because of the PS3. The membership carried over to the Vita after I got one.

Now if you look at the price difference: the subscription fee for PS+ is roughly £4 a month. Every month, I get 2 games, each worth anywhere between 20 and 40 quid. In addition to that, I get 3 PS3 games and a PS4 game (that I don't need because I don't have a PS4 but hey! if they're giving shit away...). And since I was already paying for those 3 PS3 games anyway, the 2 Vita games might as well be free.

You're focusing on wording too much while missing the point altogether. Yeah, sure, the games are not technically free. But that does not make the service any less good and the platform any less attractive as a result.

My preference is the Vita over the 3DS as a piece of hardware, though right now my 3DS is getting a bit more love thanks to having Pokemon on it. I guess it's a choice of games at this point so I'd suggest lining up a list of games you want to play on each system and then choosing. Though if you do get a Vita definitely check out this game called Gravity Rush as I list it as one of my favorite games ever and by the look of your game choice I think you'd love it.

As others have said, the 3DS has better exclusive options available. But, I am finding all sorts of good games on the Vita. Not just exclusives, but the PSN stuff as well. There are TONS of games from PS1, PSP, and Vita for that system. You have a vast library, and older games are nice and cheap~

3DS doesn't have the most fantastic store, sadly. I find it hard to flip through it too. It takes too long to load stuff and is rather sluggish overall. But man, the amount of hours I've sunk into MH3 Ultimate, Kid Icarus Uprising, Animal Crossing, Etrian Odyssey 4...

There is one trump card for the Vita though. It has games from the Ys series for $15. And then my fave, Memories in Celcetta. Hard to have a contest when you have the best of Ys available.

Gravity Rush really needed better storytelling, honestly. But, I did just get done re-playing it, and I LOVE the gravity based gameplay. It's so fun~ Music and environments are lovely too. It did good to get me into the Vita

As a 3DS owner who's going to buy a Vita provided that some of the upcoming JRPGs are dual audio (read: playable with the sound on), I'll say this:

Other than Smash Brothers, there's nothing decent on the way for the 3DS this year at all; and this slow-to-grow library with just a few real stand-outs has been a 3DS problem for AGES. Of the games that are out already, Fire Emblem Awakening, X/Y and Bravely Default are the only properly excellent ones. Furthermore, there's the problem of region locking on the 3DS that you don't have to contend with on the PSVita (provided you have a separate memory card for games from other regions).

In short, unless you desperately want those three or four big Nintendo hitters (Bravely Default excluded, since it's not exclusive) I'd argue the Vita is faaar better. The Vita's release schedule this year is crowded with good stuff, and when you cut the shovelware garbage out from both system's libraries, the Vita actually has more than three titles left! It'll have the Tales series Hearts R this year, and it has a bunch of PS3 titles like Dragon's Crown and the upcoming Ragnarok Odyssey that offer cross-play...

Yeah. I'd argue a Vita will be better value for a student who can't have both.

i just dont like the wording, its a lie, plus it could confuse newcomers who might believe they will have access to their games after they cancel their subscription
