I think it would be helpful if 911 (Police) had an ability so you could text them instead of calling in. For example what if you were choking and couldn't talk? Or if someone broke into your house and you don't want to give up your location? I personally think it would be a great thing to do country wide. (Sorry if they already have this and I'm just plain clueless.)

Wow as of right now Yes and No are tied with 37. Crazy.

Thats not a bad idea actually! This allso help if you are in an area with bad connection. ( a forest, basement), or if you have a broken cellphone, and other cant hear you.

Yes and no. Yes it would be faster and more 'efficient'. No because generally they want to know what it is that's wrong. If two people text them, which do they go to first? One might be a mild disturbance, the other might be a murder.

Actually, completely No.
You wouldn't just text in and say "I need help" you would probably have to state the situation and tell them where you are.

But that would take forever. Txting is a lot slower than talking. You might as well just dial 911.
Lol but my point is what if you couldn't talk. Like if you were choking.

You'd be dead by the time the text was finished. Didn't think that one through did you?

It takes too long and they'd get all sorts of vague texts like, "lol sum1 jst set my house on fire. :( can u com get teh guy for me and arest him? k thx PS. fix ma house pls?".

Yes but you would give away where you are, i think he means as only if your bound and gagged, and/or hiding.

I think it would be a good idea, if not over used and only used for emergencies like that, it would help ion numerous situations.

Not if you're professional really good at it.

Well if it was something mild like the neighbours having an argument or something then sure, but if it was an emergency, like someone got hit by a car or mugged then phoning would be so much faster and easier.

No way, there'd be way a ton more fake 911 texts. The calls aren't that bad, since people would have to actually talk to someone.

They'd have there system flooded in no time with messages like:

hlp im chking on aple! lol! nt rly.

THAT makes sense. But it'd probably be taken advantage of a heap; once word got out, kids would be txting 911 and giggling to themselves when the cops came to the house nextdoor to arrest a child molester. Mobiles are a lot harder to trace than landlines.
Well, if people really felt that badly wanting to accuse their neighbours of being a child molester, ther are always secluded pay phones around town to use.

Nice revolverwolf, that post made me smile.

Yeah, if 911 text messaging was allowed it would almost certainly be abused.

Also, I just don't see there being really any practical or realistic uses for this service.

So, in short ...No, bad idea.

You do realize just keying in 911 puts you on notice, even if you don't say anything or even hang up immediately afterwards.

My dog called 911 and he didn't say anything at all, yet the cops showed up minutes later demanding to search the house, where they found him in the back bedroom asleep on the phone.
