No, they'll have no idea what anyone is saying in their texts.

OMG MA HOUSES IS UP IN DA FLAM! hlp! LOL FYRE!
Ok a lot of people have been saying stuff like this. But honestly I don't know one person that actually texts like this. You guys have a point that there might be some crank texts but when you call in and say something stupid they still come over to your house or wherever you are and you get in trouble.
...

How many people do you know, exactly?

That's not even a joke. Really. Out of every 10 people I know under the age of 21 (counting only the ones that text), 7 text like that. Really.

Fact is that the phrase "kthxbai" is suggested to me by T9word (autotype, whatever you want to call it).

We must have a big difference in friends then. I text around 7-9 people regularly and every single one of them texts legibly.

You wouldn't just text in and say "I need help" you would probably have to state the situation and tell them where you are.
But that would take forever. Txting is a lot slower than talking. You might as well just dial 911.
Lol but my point is what if you couldn't talk. Like if you were choking.
If you were choking, you'd find it relatively hard to text.
Yes I understand now that choking isn't the best example, and would be better to just call 911. But things like if for some strange reason that probably would be your fault and someone is hunting you down to kill you texting the police saying oh I'm here and someone has a gun so be careful.
Just for being that stupid to not realize choking would prevent you from texting should automatically qualify you for a genepool culling.

Not to mention the implication that every call to 911 asking for the police is a case of...

I don't watch enough horror movies to make a good reference. Insert your own.

I think it would be helpful if 911 (Police) had an ability so you could text them instead of calling in. For example what if you were choking and couldn't talk? Or if someone broke into your house and you don't want to give up your location?
1. There are ways to help yourself if you're choking. And if you don't know these procedures, you're a dumbass because everyone should know it.
2. If a person BROKE INTO YOUR HOUSE, how would it be bad to give up your location? They already know where you are! Unless you mean your location within the house, in which case you could hide in a locked room, or whisper, or maybe even fend off the criminal yourself (Y'know, self defense and whatnot.).

In conclusion, 911 texting is a very stupid and impractical idea.

Yeah. I don't see how that would be a bad thing.
It would be a bad thing because there would be a need for more EMTs/firefighters/police due to the sharp spike in prank calls this would cause.

Someone breaks in to a house.

You know you can just dial 911, hang up, and they send everything, right?
what kind of moron would do that!? That is the best why of getting yourself killed if the person is hostile! Just call the d*** service and everything is fine in 5 minutes! You might as well walk down the middle of a highway playing a Nintendo DS for gods sake!

"Help me! Send an ambulance, ive cut off all my fingers! i texted this with my toes!"

i reckon its a good idea if u nee to get cops without making a sound, but there would be so many pranks that it may become unfeasable

I don't quite see how everybody thinks there will be so many pranks. It's the police. You just plain don't screw with them and if you do you get in big trouble.

Actually, this could be very useful, if it were to be handled well enough.

I mean, yeah, you can call and hangup and they'll send everything, but in, say, a situation where you don't need everything (like, most situations), they could set up a basic code system.

So, for example, you enter 911 in the texting area, the phone immediately becomes silent, you enter a series of very simple menus to indicate to the receiver what needs to be sent and how much of it needs to be sent (so they don't send special forces to a mugging), and then an optional field for a description of the case, if the sender has the ability to describe it. Then the text goes off to emergency response center, they can figure out where the phone is pretty quickly on their computers (I assume they can, I don't see why they couldn't, I mean, they should be able to triangulate the location from phone towers in the area, right?), and appropriate emergency services, not an all-out thing that would be sent on a hang-up, can be dispatched.

This would allow for somewhat specific calls for help to be sent in a very small amount of time, and they would be completely silent as well.

Yes thank you. This is what I was trying to say before but couldn't find the right words. If it was organized like this it would be a pretty helpful tool.

...Okay, i've read through this thread and pretty much everything has been said at least once now, so i have decided to post it all:
No, Texting is NOT a good idea for 911.

No matter how fast you can text, you still must direct the text to a number. the quick and also silent 'call and hang up' method will therefore always be faster, and still garnish a response, if not a faster one than texting.

While it is much harder to accidently text 911, the only way this would be of any benefit, is if we had text as the only way to contact 911. Which i think everyone knows is a bad idea.(hopefully)

Practical jokes could be a reasonable problem. While yes, if you really wanted to prank 911, calling with the payphone up the street would work the best. But that would require work. A group of drunken teens, for instance, wouldn't probably go all the way as use the payphone. The texting would allow them to make the prank without having to think about the consequences or interact with another human being.

One or two people brought up deaf people, one person going so far as to say txting would be the only way for them to reach police. While simply calling 911 might be two slow for deaf people bleading to death, Making 911 services everywhere accessable to texting might be overkill when we already have a service for deaf people to use in emergencies called TDDs (telecommunications device for the deaf)

RECAP FOR THOSE WHO GENERALY DONT READ POSTS before being stupid and posting things already said:
Calling 911 and not saying anything is faster, quieter, and easier to trace than txt messages
Accidently calling 911 will happen with or without texting, it doesn't factor into this argument.
Txting makes pranking 911 more accessable.
Deaf people have special 911 services, (see http://www.nirmalpatel.com/blog/2009/02/24.html for more info)

and finally the most compelling of arguments:
OMG nEd hlp, 2 ppl R in mI hous, lked up wfe n kds & lkn 4 mE. Cn hav ur hlp? kthxbai! lol

vdgmprgrmr: Yes that could work, if we could track cellphones that fast... doesn't work that fast, unfortunatly.
also, 911 is only 911 because of it's simplicity... having a step by step thing like that would either take too much time in an emergency or require everyone to memorize what to do...

i don't think it would be practical enough.

Most compelling? More like most unlikely...You have some reasonable points and thanks for summarizing the entire thread (not really but it looks like it took a while so I appreciate your determination) but I still think it should be at least looked into by police forces or the government or whatever.
