Today while I was "surfing" the escapist forums I came upon a thread regarding a certain movie (I will not say which one) and in this thread an "annonymous escapist" (Would rather not say for the person's sake) made an outlandish, uncalled for remark. Completely out of the blue he said "I bet you wipe your arse with someone else's cock." Now for the sake of an even arguement, what I replied to him with (to help the author and thread in general) was "Well that was mildly immature and an inappropriate troll attack. I know you're the kind that does, but when it comes down to someone asking about why everyone hates a creative, and a more original movie then marines fighting aliens, that kind of answer is unnecessary. You're just a low-life scum sucking troll from under a London bridge. Once you're done with being stupid and immature such as this, you can get the f**k off the forums." I later recieved a warning on that post for (and get this crap): Do not insult other users, simply report and move on. Please read the forum rules.

I know what I said put me in the wrong today and most of you will probably disagree with what I posted, saying stuff like "It wasn't your business, you should've stayed out of it." Which is right, yet also wrong; These are my forums as well as your's and I believe we should not be punished for speaking against trolls, and to call them "users" is disgraceful. For the record, he was banned for 7 days shortly after for a different post and I had reported him briefly after posting my comment.

So I ask you humble escapists what is your opinion on this, what you would've done instead and why you think that what you would've done was right.

Edit: To know he is a troll, when asked The antagonist of the last game you played has come to life asking for revenge? He simply (and thoughtlessly) replied with AND QUOTE!

"Firstly, I'd learn to spell correctly, then I'd crawl back up my mother's **** and die.

Oh no wait, that's what YOU should do."

It wasn't wrong so much as you've lost to him. Trolls are stupid wastes of bandwidth, but they don't care if people tell them that. I think the only real way to deal with them is not even respond. Usually insulting a troll results in trolls trolling the troll trying to troll them, and then we have what is commonly referred to as a 'Sh*tstorm' coming in. Just move on, even if it's tempting to give them a full broad-side of well-deserved insulting.

Ok then, noted.

I saw both posts you mentioned and would have said something myself but my youngest started reading over my shoulder so had to move to a more family friendly thread.

Basically it makes you feel good for a few minutes knowing you've wrote a post that makes him look foolish but he's just sat there grinning knowing he's managed to annoy someone.

Old saying, never argue with a moron they will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

"You're just a low-life scum sucking troll from under a London bridge."

Well that's specific.

OT: And dem be the rules. If anything you should have received a warning for insulting this nation's bridgework.

But yeah, I was once told by a mod that I was an advocate of rape because I made a joke about using roofies (like the 3 billion other people do who have seen The Hangover), so I can't say my experience with them has been particularly logical either.

I guess the idea was to take preventative action against you derailing a thread, but personally I don't think that any action should be taken against you unless you reply again.

Haha London does have great bridges, it was the only place I could thing of at the time. As for the replying again, well that's just not likely.

As was stated, although I wouldn't say you were "wrong" as such, you did 'lose' to the troll.

Slightly off topic I've been put on probation twice for stupid reasons... once for quote "using the term butthurt"

It happens all the time. You say something that you feel is justified but the Mod's just see it as "These are the rules and I stick by them regardless of context" It sucks but Ive gotten used to it. I have to because one more problem and I get suspended :( I dont wanna get suspended

If someone puts a bomb in your house, don't kick it. Call a professional.

If someone drops a troll-turd in your thread, don't touch it. Call the professionals.

And, as a bonus; The professionals, or the Mods here, do care about what they do. If you disagree with their actions, send them a message and discuss it with them with civility. There's a user-group for it, I'll edit in a link in a moment. Don't make threads here where they may not see them, they'd appreciate the feedback directly. In much less clear-cut cases than this (you did kinda break the rules) you might even be able to ask them for their reasoning behind their decision.

Feeding a troll is the fastest way to get your hand bitten. Pretty sure that's a saying. Somewhere.

Anyway, when that happens to me, I always try to respond as calmly and as rationally (and as patronisingly) as I can. Trolls live to see you get angry. If you don't get angry, instead responding peacefully, they get frustrated.

Then the mods come in and deal with them and you can pat yourself on the back knowing you've won.

Eh its some guy behind a computer screen. What can you do? I don't blame you for ripping his head off because honestly I want to do that around here some times. Yet you should of just left it be. Report and move on, the mods here are swift on that kind of stuff.

First two sentences of your response to that guy: Way to go, couldn't agree more :)

Last two sentences: Yeah, that was kind of crude, regardless of what he was saying you probably deserved a warning for that.

You prove a pretty solid point, but if a bomb was in my house I'd wouldn't even think about professionals, I'd just run (haha).

Um... It was the only thing off the top of my head, I could've said Winnnipeg, or New York, or Ukraine.

What you did was wrong, not from a moral or rule standpoint, but from the fact you wasted time to actually do it.

Best way to handle trolls is to starve them out... or do the Freddie...

Admittingly I did get a bit carried away and go overboard in the 2nd half.
