Aye its a fairly Decent game if dated now, but still its an enjoyable game so why not!

Edit: Dont forget if you intend to play FF7 on your PS2 you will need a PlayStation 1 Memory card!

So I might be getting a PS2 here soon and I've been mulling over what games I should buy. I'm really on the fence about Final Fantasy 7 for one reason. I know a few things storywise and I don't want that to ruin my experience. I know about Zack and some stuff about Midgar and I know about THE death. (Yeah you know what I'm talking about) Along with some small things, I think.

So what do you think guys? Should I buy it or not?

[Try to keep this thread spoiler free please]
Say what you want about the story, some like it some don't (I love it), but the Materia system alone sells it for me.
It makes every character versatile and usable, and the micro managing of equipment and magic is both fun and rewarding and alters the gameplay experience.

My only complaint is that the game is too easy.

I'm just playing it for the first time. I really love it, although it really drags quite a lot, especially at the beginning (I'm currently in the 1/3 according to a waslkthrough and it's still quite on the slooooow side).

Of course I also know about about the 'ubermegaspoiler' which eveyrone uses as an example of storytelling in gaming and shit... Ah well.

Either way, a good way to play FFVII is on a PC with a PSX emulator, which allows to save at any moment. The save points are around 20 minutes apart, which is quite a bit too much.

If Square makes a remake with some actual graphics (like in the PS3 demo), less dragging and little or no random encounters, I'll buy a console.
I agree, the save points are much too far apart.

Am I the only one who first payed it on the computer? Everyone I talk to thinks I'm lying, but I've got a pc version of the game, and no I'm not talking emulator.

Regardless of what you may or may not know (my heart goes out to you for having such an amazing story ruined), Final Fantasy VII is still one of the greatest fantasy stories ever told. Heck, I accidentally had "the death" ruined for me while I was playing, but when it finally came down to it I was depressed for the next week. It's that freaking good. I say, absolutely. As a gamer, or anyone who loves a good story, Final Fantasy VII absolutely cannot be missed for any reason.
Personally, I had barely used the "character in question" so when "The Death" happened I really didn't care much. I preferred the idea of Cloud matching up with Tifa anyway, so I had no attachment to Dead character.
A lot of people say that. I didn't use said character in battle pretty much at all, but remember, this is Final Fantasy. Events like that do not only affect gameplay, they more importantly affect story. I thought Tifa/Cloud was probably a better match (especially once playing Crisis Core and seeing Zack's role in all this), but the blooming romance between Cloud and said character was just so cute, and said character had such a great "innocent" quality, that I had gotten really connected to the character. It also helps that said character was my date at the Golden Saucer.

On another note, Aerith's Theme is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. But then, what else would I expect from Nobou Uematsu, one of the greatest composers ever to live. The Final Fantasy series has some of the best music ever written, for a game, movie, of even just as music.
Ah, so you're just a big ole softie. Who needs a hug?

To be honest with you from my personal experience having never owned it (rented/borrowed)
FF Seven was an adequate game, However never as satisfying as 5 was. (I have always had a deep seeded and somewhat strange satisfaction and love for Class level up) So much So that I would recommend Final Fantasy Tactics over Seven any day of the week! Again, that?s not to say Seven is bad or somehow less then a solid play through. (Point in fact to be honest, be prepared to spend no less then 60+ hours on it, just leveling to be on par with what challenges come next and then again, tactics will have some of that grind too)

-Gir.I.Am: Remembers taking syphon filter serious growing up?

Ps: Legend of Dragoon was great too (at least I enjoyed it)

THE death of aeris isn't important to the story at all.

But yeah, all the extra stuff is fun, and finding them (w/o a guide) is hard as shit

Yeah give it a buy. I got it from the playstation store and after getting used to the dated graphics I got really into the story. It is a good game in my books but probably not worth paying a large chunk of money for. Do you know how much it will cost to get?
No but I'd hope I could find it for under 60 dollars.

If you own a PS2 and don't have FF7, Crazy Taxi and Silent Hill 2, you might as well take it back.

Do it, man. DO IT.

Edit: This could help you figure stuff out. http://ps2.ign.com/articles/772/772296p1.html
That list is meh. It mostly has good games on it but the order is funky. I mean San Andreas Number one? Having a Guitar Hero game on it?

But I hear you man.
The Guitar Hero franchise, which has been milked to death at this point, was a MASSIVE hit and #2 was by far the biggest step forward in terms of co-op play, difficulty, and just had a killer track list. It's really all a matter of taste though. For me, the inclusion of Virtua Fighter 4 on the list is just silly.
Yeah I despise the Guitar Hero franchise but I will admit 2 was probably the best. And yes it is odd that Virtua Fighter 4 is on the list. Not one of the STRONGER fighting games I've played. (what a horrible pun)
