Poll: A Little Late to the Punch (Oblivion)

Skyrim.
I am excited about Skyrim, everyone is! But unfortunately, I have never played another Elder Scrolls games. I looked into the earlier version, but have concluded that most of them might be too archaic, hard to find, or just out of my taste to play. Except for one, Oblivion.

I really do want to prepare for Skyrim (since apparently it's going to blow all of ours minds). So, tell me Escapist, is Oblivion still relevant and powerful enough to pay 15-25 dollars to play on a PC that can run it on top settings?

It is a really good game and the content will last you a while, so I say shell out the cash and get it.

Get enough mods and it'll look better than a lot of modern games, and have several hundred hours of playability so...purchase it, yes.

The main quest is crap, but the sidequests are heaps of fun. Good game with a lot to do.

I just got back to Oblivion last week, and I last played Morrowind 2 years ago. So I don't think it's too late.
Also it's better to spend $20 than $60 and later realizing that you don't like it.

yes, yes, and hell yes. oblivion is a wonderful game even by todays standards. if you get it on pc its even better with the huge mod support. i would even go so far as to say you should also get morrowind since there is a mod that updates the graphics and fixes tons of the bugs. you dont really have to play either to understand the story or anything (most elder scroll games do a very nice job at easing new players into their universe) so dont feel threatened by the games at all

odds are if you like oblivion (which most RPG players do) you will like all of the elder scrolls games since they have similar fundamental mechanics but are just set in different places with different people

It's a really good game if you do what you want and don't focus too much on the story. The story is rather dull, but you can spend hours satisfying your curiosity to explore; which you will be with the freedom to roam the country, side-quests, dungeons, etc.

My recommedation: Get it.

It really depends on what you enjoy. If your thing is open world and dungeon crawling (although understand that the dungeons only have a few templates and beyond that are basically copy paste jobs) then you'll get 15-25 dollars worth of enjoyment out of it.

If you are looking for a well realized world with good characters and writing you should avoid Oblivion like the plague. Oblivion is much more heavily balanced on the action side of things then the RPG side of things and thats fine but its worth understanding that for the things that RPGs are typically known for (story, characters, writing) it falls pretty flat.

It's a wonderful game and easily worth the money. It has far more game play than most games on the market, so you'll feel that your money was well spent.

Sure, why not, you never can have too many good games. It is definetly worth the money, and it is a great game besides (my favorite TES game is still Morrowind, but Oblivion is still very good).

Oblivion has a very active modding community. Some exceedingly crazy people have re-textured a fair amount of the world to bring it up to modern standards. There are also independently-created missions and add-ons that expand the game's universe (the most ambitious of these being Nehrim [http://www.nehrim.de/], which is basically an entirely new game).

Visit TES Nexus [http://www.tesnexus.com/] and start browsing. At the very least, you should get the Oblivion Mod Manager, and probably also Qarl's Texture Pack (as an OBMM module).

I recommend playing Morrowind first, just because the main quest is better, and once you get Oblivion, you can really enjoy it more. (Once you can jump across rivers, you know you've beaten Morrowind. I still remember my cousin hasn't finished his stronghold quest. I REALLY recommend you do that.) Last thing. Look up the "Mudcrab Merchant" everyone. Seriously, one of the best things ever. DON'T F**KING KILL IT!
