I was playing Fallout 2,running away from the Fire Geckos the quadbazzlionth time, when a realization hit me like 4 tons of whale fat. What is my character trying to achieve? Save his village? He's not doing that,he's doing quests for people he's never met and won't benefit him in anyway apart from some XP and cash. He is probably the unluckiest person on Earth (Or the ashes of it anyway). 50% of the things he meets are ether trying to kill him or take advantage of him,he probably wakes up screaming at night and a hike to another town takes weeks and there is loads of things waiting to kill him along the way.

I think Black Isle is trying to tell us something.

Maybe it is truly pointless to prepare and get ready to survive. We are all going to die in Nuclear war, some just later then sooner, thus, giving them a chance to die from radiation poisoning, the most horrible way to die.

So,escapist,am I overanliszing or is there really a message here?

Having not played Fallout 2, I can't comment too much, but I think the most obvious one would be "nukes are bad, don't use them or MUTANTS EAT YOUR FLESH".

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I thought the message was "war, war never changes"

Yes, the message is if nukes get used, your life will be a meaningless hell from which there is little to no chance of escape. I think fall out 3 tries to show us the hell that is a nuculer detonation, though we hopefully will never fully understand the true horror that accompanies a nuclear bomb. and yes, I know I cannot spell lol

Yeah, conflict and war is pretty much the main theme of Fallout. But it's worthy to remember Fallout is a game an a work of fiction, and not every aspect of it is directed towards some sort of hidden subtext and meaning.

Actually you're overanalyzing common game procedures like quests. Trying to apply real world logic to game logic does not work. Games have their own internal and unique logic.

That's just how RPGs work. No matter what you are doing there will always be time for side quests. Friend dying from a deadly disease? Big Bad about to unleash his doom weapon on your home? Doesn't matter, you still have time to help Farmer Jim find his lost dog.

As for everything trying to kill you, that's just another part of being in an RPG. Every conceivable foe will try to end your quest. In Earthbound, you have to fight against living Clocks and taxi cabs. Everything will always want the main character dead.

Yea, fallout has a message, and I'm not taling about Ron perlman's epic "war, war never changes" monologue... Fallout 2's message is you do whatever you need to do to make sure you and your companions stay alive. my favourite karma bagde ever: grave robber, and the motto... they are dead, they don't care!

But according to MGS4 "War has changed".
War has changed, but its cutscenes are longer than ever. haha.

I think with Fallout 2, the message is more hopeful than it would seem on the surface. I took it as being that no matter how damaged the world may be, there is always a chance to start over. This is certainly apparent with the GECK, as it allows a town to make a completely fresh start.

Fallout 2...damn that game was fun.
