What is my character trying to achieve? Save his village? He's not doing that,he's doing quests for people he's never met and won't benefit him in anyway apart from some XP and cash.

Put yourself in his shoes. You're an ignorant semi-primitive sent out into a world you know nothing about and told to find something resembling a myth. Almost everyone whom you ask about the GECK look at you funny and to make it better, you're practically broke and poorly equipped. Heck, a blue jumpsuit is considered a holy relic.

You're stumbling along trying to find ANY clues as to your main objective and get swept away in the petty struggles of the Wasteland's inhabitants. You do the quests for cash so you'd have the basic resources to survive, as you're forced to face more and more dangerous situations in the post-apocalyptic USA.

Spoiler: Story spoilers ahead

And finally, your main quest is somewhat pushed to the sidelines by the fact that your village gets destroyed and you're forced to fight not only to rescue the survivors, but also to stop the Enclave from wiping everyone out.

What were you expecting? A quest market on the map saying "GECK here!"?
