So I'm starting a new game in Elder Scrolls III GOTY edition (PC) and I was wondering if The Escapist could help me with building my first character. I know Morrowind is very popular around here and I adore Oblivion and Fallout 3, so I picked this up for dirt cheap in the Steam sale awhile back and am downloading it as we speak.

Basically, I'm looking for any tips/stories you might have. Perhaps your experience with certain builds/skills which were really great (or really terrible).

Thanks!

Dammit. Somehow I managed to click thief instead of warrior. Warriors are the easiest to play when starting off I think, so go with that.

If its your first play through get some graphics mods for it.

Also, go for heavy or medium armour with a warrior. Rolling a full on mage from the start would probably be more difficult

If you've never done it before, try using blunt weapon as your main. Solstheim has a really sweet mace, and some of the most interesting weapons are, indeed, blunt. I was suprised by how much my playthrough was affected by my using this different weapon type.
Same goes with archery.
Edit: I misread that.
This is your first time with Morrowind ever? Awesome. You should stream it.

That being said, I strongly suggest some alteration specialty; you will be able to use feather, water breathing, and lock picking.
Most importantly, levitation. You NEED levitation in this game if you're an explorer-type gamer. I once saw a crevace in the ceiling of a cavern and levitated up to it to find a daedric claymore sticking up out of a ring of skulls. There are so many little things to find either under water or above eye level; don't hesitate to go and look!

Still, make longblade at least one of your major weapon skills, unless you're completely abhorent of physical fighting. All the best weapons are, sadly, longblade. There are almost no neato axes, sadly. Shortblade is prolly the second best, with tons of knives of epic enchantments.

This place has the Steel Blade of Heaven, which I find is a huge convenience if you can get it.

I roll a spellsword for most of my playthroughs. I like the combination of being able to use weapons effectively and still being able to cast useful spells. The best of both worlds if you ask me.

Mage for the win. I love playing as a skull bashing warrior but there's something coldly satisfying about slinging instant death spells at an enemy ..;.

Yes, I had heard multiclassing was much more effective in Morrowind, especially the Spellsword (which is why I gave it a privileged position on the Poll =p )

A Warrior type is probably the easiest to do in the beginning because you will hit harder, more effectively, and be able to take more hits.

Thief types will generally have more cash to toss around for bribes/gear/spells etc.

Mage types are harder to play in the beginning but become very powerful later on (at least I would assume so as I haven't ever gotten a Mage very far).

The only Spellsword type I've ever done only used magic for healing after fights, so I don't have much experience there either.

What should be my weapon skill? Long Blade? I suggest that because I found this post persuasive:

Sure, blunt, short blades or long blades will work just fine. Obviously you'll want an armor skill as one of your mains. Medium is always a good balance between damage reduction and stamina drain. Of course if you're wanting to do any casting then light would be recommended.

Try not to be dependent on more than three main stats, otherwise you may break your character.
Question: If you do go Melee, is restoration worth picking up? (I remember it being useful in Oblivion) or should you just go with Alchemy? (or is there another way to heal effectively?)

Secondary Question: WHY would you torment me with memories of the SC2 beta via your avatar? You monster. =p

Mage in morrowind is difficult, especially if you come from oblivion. Thief type characters are hard to level and, for me at least, are the most frustrating archetype to play in morrowind. I'd guy with a warrior or some sort of spell sword for your first. But in all honesty, you'll probably play the first 2 hours of the game 4 or 5 times before you get a character that you can rock n roll with.

I find Crusader is a good place to start if you like combat/magick. Because it has both Restoration and Repair as skills its a fairly self supporting class and it leaves allot of freedom as the whether you want to go magick or stabby stabby. But then again im biased towards Crusaders.

Make your own custom class.

I prefer to specialize in Long Blade, Axe, and Heavy Armor.I also recommend Destruction, Restoration, and Block. Athletics as well as Acrobatics help you move around the world more effectively, so those are always good choices. Choose your skills carefully, Your stats make a big difference.

I wouldn't recommend that a new player specializes in some of the other magic skills, like Conjuration and Mysticism.

Also, buy the spell called Hearth Heal from the tradehouse in Seyda Neen (the first place you start in). It's a nice, cheap healing spell that will be useful for several levels.

This Morrowind is uuuuuggggllyyyy, and don't listen to people who say it dampens the experience the mod community over the last what 8 years? Has put more time and love into the game than the developers ever did.

Manycam works fine for me, (There's a watermark on default, but it turns off with the check of a box) and Ustream is pretty accessable. I don't know the details for sound streaming on PC, though. Really, though, feel free to mute the game, or not have it show up in the stream, 'cause frankly, I think almost everyone on the 'Scapist knows all the sounds by heart.
More importantly, we're all sick of the Cliffracer whistle.

I generally prefered to play as a thief analog but if given enough time, I generally ended up proficient at sneaking, security, marksman, long swords, short swords and thrown. On the character I played the longest (up to around level 60) there wasn't much I couldn't do save cast a wide array of spells. Generally I just got a spell within a given tree so that I could do the associated enchantment. By end game, thanks to strange limitations placed on the enchanting system, I ended up with a character with a strength, agility and speed all in the 150 - 200 point range which more or less broke the game.
