Might I suggest D&D Online? It's gone over to a free-to-play option, no charge for the game itself, and it has some major differences from other fantasy MMOs. Yes, there is some content which requires cash purchase, but that's entirely your choice, and if you're willing to pay the monthly subscription then a lot of that content is free.

From the above list, I'd recommend Guild Wars. EVE requires a lot more intelligence and thought than most WoW players are willing to put into a game, and the others I'm not familiar with so I won't comment.

Champions Online and City of Heroes/Villains are a very different genre, but are both good in different ways. CO has a more robust power selection system and costume customization while CoX has a larger world, larger power roster and has simply been around longer.

You obviously haven't tried anything else, sad, but true, wake up and have your corn flakes buddy.

Guild Wars if you want balanced PvP fun, it's PvE is good but better known for it's PvP, oh and you will have an extra £10 a month to spend on other things aside from rental fees.

EvE if you want something you don't need to pay much attention to for more than about 5 mins at a time, and still feel like coughing up £10 a month.

I have been hearing good things about Aion and WAR seems to have some serious balancing issues, so Guild Wars, EvE or Aion

But concerning your response: I own guild wars, and I've played it for awhile. I found it to be boring, anti-social, and just all around not fun. It has better graphics than WoW I'll give it that.

But WoW is lighthearted, it can make fun of itself, and it makes wasting your life...fun?

I have been playing WoW for a while now got a 80 and have him geared enough to do anything i want to so the appeal for the game is almost gone. After this months paycard is up i want to start another MMO. ive been thinking of playing Warhammer but does anyone else have anyother suggestions?

Personally, I'd go with EVE Online. It's huge, it's fun, and you will NEVER be able to see all the content, which means a lot of it will be at least a little bit fresh.

There is Dungeons and Dragons Online [http://ddo.com], from the same people who made Lord of the Rings Online. The difference is that you can play DDO for free, and maybe make some microtransactions here and there to buy things at the built-in store. Also you can pay for it monthly, but that's a bit pointless since all it gives you are a few classes and races.

Hey, man, it's not a waste if you're having fun. I do find WoW to be quite enjoyable, but it's not all-around the best. If you can find yourself a good guild and some buddies to play with, it's a lot better, but it's just a bit too grind-focused for my tastes. The instances, maps, storylines, and all that good stuff are great though.

You could always skip the MMOs and play other stuff for a bit, then see if you're more excited for WoW when the expansion is released? Most people get burned out with WoW at some stage, but i've mostly found it fun when returning after a break.

City of Heroes or Champions Online is your best bet. They make WoW look like a waste of time (Which like most grindtastic MMOs.. it is XD)

To add to the list, I would recommend FFXI if you like a challenge. And I mean challenge. This game is back-breaking-ly difficult to progress in. But alot of fun if you do.

I tried a free MMO names Jade Empire, which was pretty cool, but it didn't keep my attention for very long because the controls were awkward. Still, I never expected the graphics to be as good for a free game.

Also, like recommended by many people, try Aion for a slightly different take on a good formula. It does many things in a different way to other MMO, and in general is a very fun and polished game. There are a few teething problems like server queues, some problems with quest items while in alliance, and the fact that I have been able to get into places where player characters are never meant to be but still this game has alot of potential once more servers are up and running.

Guild Wars is fun, but I am not keen on the idea of being able to get the best items simply by being richer IRL than other players. Not that the gear is very expensive, but I prefer to quest or battle for better items.

Eve Online is good if you find bureaucracy to be one of those fun sexy things in the world. I suspect this would be the best game ever if you are a Vogon.

I think in the end with WoW and Guild Wars it all boils down to whether you have people to play with and whether you are willing to pay for a subscription and with WoW, lets face it, the seemingly endless hours to grind up to a level where things actually start happening (I played and got up to level 37 still nothing 'fun' had happened and if a game isn't fun almost half way through the leveling system it need some serious looking at)

If you're a fan of the shin megami tensei series, then I'd have to reccomend the Megaten MMO: Imagine to you.
It's pretty different to other mmo's i've played.

You are right, you dont have to buy items with real money, as any of the best armors and equipment can be quested, but there is an option to purchase them instead using RL money. But I dont personally like that option.

You are right, you dont have to buy items with real money, as any of the best armors and equipment can be quested, but there is an option to purchase them instead using RL money. But I dont personally like that option.

Thats only for pvp and it has no in game bonus. When on a pvp character all armor is max, you win new armor designs, thats all it is, Aesthitics. In pve, max armor is easy to get and you can't buy anything in it with rl money, the best armors are simply flashier, not stronger in any way. You can only buy things with rl money in pvp and its $10 for any unlock pack, which unlocks virtually everything. Buying things gives you no real advantage as most things are either easy to unlock (either through pve or pvpreputation called balthazaar faction) or have no strategic advantage.

Most f2p games work this way, in gw it has no benefit outside of pvp and even then the benefit isn't great. This helps anet to support the game in addition to the game sales themselves instead of monthly fees like most mmos. If I were to play Runes of Magic or another f2p game then almost every good thing would require real money.

I've never bought anything other than the games themselves and I have never found the need to buy anything else.
