I was watching a video about the Legend of Grimrock and the person who was playing it was making his characters and he mentioned that the lizardmen made great mages, but if you look at the default stats for the lizardman you will see that the lizardman have higher stat points into agility and it got me thinking about something; do the stats or racial stats of a specific character help you make your decision for rolling a rogue or a mage or a warrior or any other class in an RPG or MMORPG?

For me it depends, in WoW I rolled a gnome mage mainly because of their stats made perfect mages but also because I liked playing the shortest Alliance race.

Nope, that's racist. We shouldn't judge fantasy races by their genetic differences. Instead I just judge based on their physical appearance. I never pick the ugly races such as orcs, lizardmen, or hobbits.

I tend to look at all the differences in the races before picking one for a class; Stats, Abilities, etc.

For example, in LotRO, I usually prefer to play an Elf. Not because their stats are different from the rest of the Free Peoples, but because their Racial Port skill sends you to Rivendell. Which is much more useful for nonHunter/nonWarden classes, than the other 3 Race's Port skills.

I played LOTO and I normally DO play Elves in RPGs (I suppose the exception was a Gnome in WoW before NEs could be mages) but I could not get into the caster class in that game (I did not have the other caster class unlocked) so I dabbled in a captain I believe was what it was called and I was sorta sad that it was a Human only class.

No, I don't usually play as trolls either. You saying you like all those races I mentioned? I mean, whatever floats your boat, but that's not my sort of thing. I can't play as any of the dumb or scaly races.

Aesthetic appeal is quite important.

I don't play any MMO's, but in RPG's I rarely go beyond visual appearances when it comes to selecting characters.

But then again I've only played Elder Scrolls

If there's one thing I love, it's stats and attributes. Granted, my usual knee jerk as to why I pick any given race is the visual aesthetic. Racial stats don't hurt though.

Nope, looks override everything unless the game is ridiculously difficult.

Depends, in modern MMOs race usually have very little impact so I just choose whatever floats my boat visually or lorewise. Sometimes I may even choose a race that is completely counter to the class to get a combination less often used.

In older RPGs race sometimes has a significant effect on gameplay, so I choose accordingly in those cases. Legend of Grimrock seems to have an old-school approach so imagine it may be possible to gimp oneself.

I have a pre-established roster of characters to choose from to make game versions of. Most of the time, I can get close enough that stats don't really make a difference. It's only when the character creator fails that I resort to munchkining.
