Ummmmmm Welsh IS the National Language of Wales I know the English want to force the whole world to speak English but *NEWS FLASH* some countries do actually LIKE to speak thier own National Languages, as much as that will shock the self absorbed English.
You think I even care that you're one side of the border of another. I care that there are children in my country (as in UK) being taught science in a language they don't speak.

I'd class that as abuse myself.

Edit, Fail quote
So let me get this straight, you are complaining because children in WALES are being taught in WELSH....what next are you going to complain that children in France are being taught in French or children in Germany are being taught in German????
The children don't speak welsh, yet they are being taught in welsh, and the parents, who also don't speak welsh and have no desire for their children to, have no recourse.

Once again, nice and simply: Its not a good idea to teach children, in a language they do not understand.
You'd be better off banging your head against a brick wall with this one.

Nothing but hate and bigotry.
It is hate and bigotry to teach children the language of the country they are living in, how would you fell ok if all the children in England were forced to learn everything in Arabic?? Why should the people of Wales be ok with their children being forced to learn everything in English, it is that view that is bigoted, if you moved to Japan, Germany or Russia you would not complain about your children learing the languages there so why should Wales be any differnt.
Except that isn't what LordFish was saying.

He was saying that Welsh children are failing at English and Maths because they don't know Welsh, a language a very small minority of Welsh people actually speak.
The reason a small minority of Welsh people speak Welsh is because we have English forced upon us at every opportunity, at one point the English Goverment practically made it illegal to speak Welsh even now Welsh speakers are passed over for jobs in favour of the English.

This is just a small example of things the English have forced upon the Welsh no matter what the Welsh said about it "In 1956, a private bill sponsored by Liverpool City Council was brought before the UK parliament to develop a water reservoir from the Tryweryn Valley, in Meirionnydd in Gwynedd. The development would include the flooding of Capel Celyn (Holly Chapel), a Welsh-speaking community of historic significance. Despite universal and bi-partisan objections by Welsh politicians (35 out of 36 Welsh MPs opposed the bill, and one abstained) the bill was passed in 1957. The events surrounding the flooding highlighted the status of the language in the 1950s and 1960s.".
Gonna make a huge whopping guess and say you weren't alive at that time.

Do you hate the Germans? Some of them did some really terrible things too.

Matter of fact, members of every country have done something terrible at one time or another.

Stop living in the past.

I was just curious as to what this thread was about, but I suppose now would be a horrible time to poke in and mention this Critical Miss comic. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/8513-Y-Ddraig-Cach]

I don't believe any of that. Give me a source.

If they had a better dragon, we'd love to put it on our flag.

But as it is, it falls well below the standard levels of awesome required.

Yep, you've pretty much wondered into an argument, Comic made me laugh, Although, as stated on daily politics, most English don't give a damn about what the welsh do or don't do. Yet the welsh constantly comment on our every policy... It's like we're being stalked, by a whole country :!

For the record, the above is hyperbole.

Offering an outside perspective to this, in north america, English and British are used essentially interchangeably. Scottish/Irish/Welsh much less so, if at all.

That's unfortunate and shouldn't have happened. It doesn't say that anyone died, just 48 people lost their homes. I doubt that the government left them without places to live. It says that the event helped wales have a bigger say in what happened in government so technically it was a win for the Welsh rather than a loss.

It might tickle me to get a British passport that says 'Canadian' on it.

My dad's a British citizen by being born in the UK to British citizens, so just for being his kid I'm automatically entitled to a British citizenship (and the passport that goes along with it), even though I was born in Canada, have always lived here and have never been in England longer than 10ish days.

Sounds one hell of a lot like Quebec.

I'm still hoping for a response to this part.

All I've heard so far is "Rabble rabble the english were mean in the past rabble rabble fuck the english" and conspiracy theories about the past. I get the feeling that he wouldn't be hard to convince that politicians are out to get him personally..

It is threads like this why we can't have nice things. Can we not even tangentially talk about something with going out about crap? While it is just as easy to cling to past beliefs it is also pretty easy to just ignore it and say learn for it and move on. I don't think I've once seen someone change another's view on anything of this regard so I don't see why people still bother. Anyway, at least it seems to be over.

Also knowingly or not N. Ireland was excluded as it isn't part of Britain. That being the reason why it is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland but that is just semantics if you want to be precise.

I'm not from the UK, and maybe this makes me a crazy person, but wouldn't that be like specifying your state on an American passport?

Like saying you're Texan rather than American?
Kind of, though probably more like saying which region you're from like the mid-west, east coast etc. Unless you're rather patriotic about your particular country/state then you'd say the state.
To be honest it doesn't really matter, the people I've found to really push the "I'm not British I'm X" usually have a chip on their shoulder about the UK in general.

I'm not partisan enough to care, no.

I'm happy being British, when I can't be European or Human.

Then why live in Wales if you don't want to speak Welsh, as I have said before that is like moving to Germany, France, Japan, Israel, etc and complaining because you have to speak the respective language.

Where's the ''I don't give a damn'' option?
Seriously, I don't mind one way or the other. If I click No, it sounds like I prefer to be called British, if I click Yes it sounds like I don't like being called British.
I don't mind either way,
The smiley face man is right!
