I hate singing, and I hate singing hymns even more. Everyone I've told this wholeheartedly agree. Singing the hymns is one of the many problems today's churches need to fix.

Honestly? I hate singing. I hate the part of church where everyone has to get up and greet each other, I hate the part where the band/chorus sings their songs, I hate every part that isn't the preacher talking.

But when he does start talking, he usually brings up a topic so interesting and philosophical, that even most non-religious people would find it interesting.

Well, they made me do it in my heavily Christian primary school, so I'm going to answer.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Fuck no. I hated it.

I was in the church choir until I graduated high school so I'm going with 'yes'. I always took it more as just 'fun' than anything else.

I like singing hymns. But I'm Jewish. Basically every prayer we have is a hymn. And they are fun for me. A lot more fun than when people just read out of the torah on Saturdays. If you are going to present me with a language I don't understand most of, you can at least do it in a singing voice or with piano accompaniment. It has also been a while since I've been a regular temple-goer. I had a bad experience at my last one and have found it hard to really get into organized religion since.

former catholic, no, never saw the point. if you enjoy it then go for it. but I don't see the point in singing aloud your faith, I think it might annoy god, he might be trying to concentrate on something.

I used to like singing a lot more before I realized how much I hated the sound of my own voice. I still sing but more at a monotone hum instead because most of the hymns are painfully outdated and the song leaders don't have a great sense of rythm either. I will give them credit because it helped me get a grasp on very basic music at a young age.

Hymns don't really bother me. It just depends on which ones we sing. If they have a couple of verses, eh... No problem.

It's when we get to the ones with four and six verses that I begin to wonder, "Will it ever end?!?!?!?!?!!!?!????!?"

Overall though, I don't mind singing. It's just part of the usual worship, and I grew up with it, so I don't see it as anyting annoying.

When I was a christian, I hated singing hymns and would just mouth the words when I thought I could get away with it.

Some hymns are beautiful. Most are awkward, derivative, and outdated. I'll never get tired of How Deep the Father's Love for Us, but I'm really glad we have a new version of Amazing Love rather than the pitchy old hymn version.

Most churches I know of have moved on mostly to more contemporary music. Only really old people still hold to the idea that we should only sing hymns.

I just don't sing hyms. I mean they are very good, but I just don't do it. Like what someone else said
Rakkana said:
No. I enjoy praising god. The method shouldn't matter.

When I was younger, yes. As I got older, no because I realized I sounded like a dying animal when singing. It wasn't so much praise as it was punishment for those around me.

One day, I read John Wesley's rules for singing (in the Methodist church) at the front of the hymnal, and they made me feel bad about my own singing. To sum it up: sing with all your heart, but if you sound like crap, you don't need to use all your voice.

I prefer the old hymns to the contemporary stuff that they play now. I hate when they whip out the organ to play the hymns on, though; it sounds like funeral music.

I'm not very big into Christianity. I was raised in a Lutheran house, went to an Evangelical church, but nothing ever stuck. So I didn't like singing hymns, I didn't like shaking the hand of my neighbor because I always was sat next to an old guy who doesn't have the motor skills to bathe themselves, and I was straight bored for the 2 hours of service.

Wow, a lot of negativity on the hymns front... I'm not a Christian but a passionate rendition of Jerusalem is always awesome.

Absolutely!

Hymns and Disney Soundtracks were my grade school music education!

Which is funny, because I usually stood next to my dad who is tone-deaf...

When I used to go to church I found that singing was a gigantic waste of time so I usually just stood there. The people that go all out singing and waving their arms in the air always annoyed me too...

People still go to church?

I had to go to a christening once, and I didn't sing at that. Honestly, I'm surprised I wasn't turned around and walked straight out of the church as soon as I walked in.

Well when I used to go (I kinda of just...stopped, still like the big guy, just don't go to his house) I did sometimes, depending upon the song enjoy the singing, probably because it meant I got to stand up and do stuff instead of just sitting down being dopey.
