I caught it under a clear plastic cup on my desk. It's been in there for about a day now, so I imagine he doesn't have long left. Regardless, should I release it into the wild, leave it, or squash it?

Well, whatever you do, even if it's just a fly, keeping it in a cup to slowly starve is kind of cruel. Take it outside if you want to show it some kindness, if not, at least put it out of its misery.

Kill it. Kill the fucker.

You let in one fly, and let it go, it will multiply. Before you know it your house will be infested and/or surrounded by the little fuckers.

I speak from experience.

Kill it. Kill it dead.

Kill it..
If you let it go, who knows.. maybe it brings back some friends... they might not show the same kindness.
If you keep it and leave it to die... maybe its friends come looking for it and find you've got it in a cup.. doesnt look good for you.
If you kill it and dispose of the body, they got nothing on you >:D

..stupid flies

This reminds of what I did once. I had a fly under a cup for a week. It was still alive, so I squished it. Good times, good times.
But squish it

Adopt it as a pet. As long as it's not actually trying to land on your face. If that's the case, kill it.

Second.

That, or post up on /b/ with a "post ending in x" post. Those guys are way more creative than we could ever be.

Oh yes, insects...

I recall a big fly that managed to get into my room, then unwisely decided to fly in front of me. Now, I keep one of those electric flyswatters around for just such an occasion, and this fly found that out the hard way.

Anyway, after the initial shock of electrified-wires-meets-fly-face where the fly crashes to the floor, I decide to scoop it up on the thing and give it another go.
That wasn't particularly difficult, I'll admit, and it does look kinda funny when their legs twitch and such when current is applied.
Normally, by the time the electricity starts to arc they die, but this one didn't. So I gave it another jolt, at which point it did another take of air-running, then promptly jumped off the thing.

So, I do what any kind, caring netizen would do and placed it back on the wires, and applied more current, because that fly was going down, damn it! However, surprisingly enough, even though it got caught between two wires and started smoking, it simply wouldn't die!

So after deciding that the smell of burnt fly would be a bother I thought to myself that I should probably toss the burned thing out the window, but it simply sat there, on the flyswatter, and polished itself off.

At that point I realized that said fly was actually quite hard to kill, and I figured that, if it was so damned determined to not die, it'd be less of an effort to just toss it out the window.

That fly earned its' freedom.

As for your fly, I think you should do what you want to it, as opposed to asking us all for opinions... however since you did ask, my opinion is to toss it out, because that'd make less of a mess (or if you have a fireplace, wrap it in a piece of paper and light it on fire, that usually does the trick).

Ask yourself this question: if you were under that cup would the fly let you go? Do what must be done. *hands over the shotgun*

Edit: Schizophrenic Justin posts are a marvel to behold.

Aw man, you caught it under a cup? You're supposed to use their presence as flyswatter practice. I've trained myself into a fly-killing ninja by doing that. One swat, one kill, midair- every time.
