Why would they when they can make thousands by reselling their old titles repackaged as 'HD Packs'. Software based PS2 emulation will cost Sony to develop it; plonking 'Playstation 2 classics' on a Blu-Ray will cost, but is a license to print cash.

It's a lovely thought though. I would love to see it, but from a money making standpoint? Nope.

Nope, slim 320GB version here. I have a PS2 hooked up to the same TV anyway.

Now, what I'd really like to see is PS2 games offered as digital purchases on the PSN. That would necessitate backwards compatibility, but it also would be a great way for them to make some money and keep us from needing to track things down on eBay.

Maybe they could even avoid regional lockout on digital imports..

[sub]Yes, I know why this is unfeasible. Uploading these games would cost more than they would make on sales.[/sub]

Nope, or I'd play GT4 far more than GT5.

As it stands I'd have to play GT4 on the squintovision, so yeh...

The only backwards compatible model is the 60GB console. The 40GB that followed and every console since then hasn't been compatible. Unless they tried to reintroduce backwards compatibility with the 80 (which I don't think happened), and considering the 80GB came out around 2 years after the PS3 launched, are you sure it's an 80 you have? If you got it when the PS3 was still newish, I'd say you have a 60, they didn't stop making those 'til around 2 - 2 1/2 years ago.
Ha I have an 80GB fully backwards compatible ps3 and I bought it brand new about 6 months after they introduced the 40GB model. Also another of my friends got his a good 4 or 5 months after me and his was backwards compatible as well so I think your alittle off with that post.
First 80s were backwards compatible but that was (mostly) software based. The first gen had all the chips and essentially had a PS2 in them.

I don't have a backwards compatible model but I do have a PS2 slim that I run using the component out settings. Looks pretty good on my TV.

Only a handful of the older 'fat' model PS3s have the backwards compatibility. I've got an old 60GB PS3 that everyone laughed at me for buying, then they bought the cheaper slims to find that a third of the Playstation library doesn't even play on their consoles.

For everyone complaining about wanting the backwards compatibility, that's not something that Sony can just 'turn on with a firmware update' there's a piece that they took out of the newer models that made them cheaper to produce at a sacrifice of being able to play PS2 games. You can either hook a PS2 up and use that or shell out the ass for an older PS3 online.

any 80GB model with 4Usb ports can download a ps2 compatbility file from PSN. did they make 80GB models without 4 ports?

I wish mine was backwards compatable, even though i have a ps2. But I'm just never in the mood to hook it up so i wont play my old lovely games :( and im not dropping like 600+ on a "new" Old ps3 just to do so.

It depends on the model.

Mine doesn't play PS2 games. I really wish it did though.
I gave a lend of my Ps2 to my friend. He sold it for weed. -_-

Ahh, explains that one. I've never seen an 80 with 4 USB ports (and I sell these for a living, maybe our store/region never sold them?), only ever 2 ports. The only 4-port consoles I've seen and traded are 60's.
