Is death an appropriate punishment for some things?
For certain extreme violent crimes, yes.

Would you dish out the punishment yourself if given the chance?
Depends on the situation. If they killed or tortured someone I cared for, yes.

I'm not very imaginative, all my examples will involve Nazis in some way. Do you believe in an eye for an eye or do you think that torturing/killing people is just making one more man endure agony?
There's a reason death is bad. When bad people do bad things, bad things should happen right back at them. That gives future possibly bad people something to consider before doing bad things.
Personally, I would love seeing public torture brought in for extreme cases of violent crimes (something along the lines of killing children, slaughtering an entire family etc.). For the most extreme, I'd even be in favour of keeping the murderer alive and torturing him for an extended period of time before killing him. The needle is not much of a punishment, cancer patients go through worse things with the doctors refusing to euthanize (something that's also quite idiotic).
Note however, there would need to be a 120% air tight case against a person with not a doubt in sight of guilt for such punishments. If there's even a shred of doubt, life in prison is the right sentence (imo).
Sorry if you find that extreme, but I just don't see a reason against it. Pain can easily be worse than death and those considering murder and/or torture should know they will face the worst for their crimes.
