I'm going to give my vote to greatest person in the last 100 years to Stanislav Petrov. Haven't heard of him? Wiki him, I'll wait....

Have you checked yet?...Seriously, check him out. Without Petrov waving off a supposed nuclear missle attacks as flaws in the Soviet radar system, the human population would have gone from 6B to 6M, if that. There has hardly been anyone that has impacted so many lives (or, for Butterfly theorists, lives that have impacted everyone so resoundingly) that no one knows about. I have no doubt that there are other great men in our history (and the 100 years thing lets me sidestep Jesus, just so I could give some praise to Petrov), but to prevent a nuclear missle attack against the USA goes a REALLY long way in my book.

Personally I think Ghandi trumps Lincoln. That and I heard that Abe had some slaves at one point.

I really really reaaaaallly don't get how people think they can judge people's worth when they haven't even met them. I don't even judge Hitler as being evil, maybe he was just really misguided.
And yet you feel free to judge him as misguided?

On that note, Socrates was the greatest human being to exist.

I don't really like talking to people who only read every other word, just going to say I put maybe, and I only even put that so that I wouldn't get flamed by haters.

No I personally do not think he is since it has been proven that Jesus is a real person that did exist about 2000 years ago.
Jesus ain't got nothin on Ghandi
Didn't Ghandi sleep with his niece or something like that to practise celibacy? I am not saying he did anything but he did do that as far as I remember.

I don't know, and honestly even if that's true I would still consider him better.

How much harm does sleeping with your niece do when compared to the overwhelming good of promoting non violence so effectively?

Well that's fair enough if you still like him better. I was just trying to point out he is not as perfect as some people make him out to be. Yes he still did great things. Also I don't even know why I am posting in this hirrbly necroed thread.

He was a good president, to be true. But as a human? Who gives a fuck? He suspended habeas corpus and jailed people who spoke out against him. If I talked about just those deeds without telling you the identity of the man who did them, you would think whoever it was was a tyrant.

Jesus being a person =/= Jesus doing anything it says in the Bible.

Nobody's perfect, honestly, if people couldn't find anything wrong with him I would be suspicious that that historical accounts of him were whitewashed and perhaps he was NOTHING like what he is made out to be.

In other words, Ghandi's flaws lend credibility to the miraculous accounts of what a good person he is.

That's why I'm suspicious of Jesus, he is described as someone with absolutely no flaws, which I refuse to believe, thus casting doubt on the entire account of him. (at least for me)

i would have to say no personally, kinda hard to trump Ghandi..... he thought liberty was priceless, but not worth destroying his fellow man for, he had the courage to stand up to oppression and lead a country to its freedom without sacrificing its character. he failed poor ghandi, but by jaysus if we all failed like ghandi did the world would be a much better place.

of corse ghandi is nothing compared to bruce cambell, but bruce is a god, so obviously not eligible for this poll

WWWHHHHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAA!!

*Glassy eyed*

OT: Say what you will, keeping the states united was probably the hardest thing to do in the history of this country, not just simply because it was war, but because it was against our own people. Many wars in countries, even inside of your own country, have this 'us and them' feeling. This was the historic 'us and us' battle.

Dont be silly, Stephen Fry is the greatest human to ever live.
This is also my answer. Man was a bad boy in his youth and grew up to be a national icon for a country that prides itself on tea and some old tart on a throne. Here's to you, Mister Fry.

I know this thread is several months old, but if you're in the UK the BBC is doing a documentary on Lincoln on BBC4 11 oclock tonight. "Abraham Lincoln: Saint or Sinner?"

While Im sure the OP has finished researching him, anyone else interested might like to have a look at this. I think its a series, and another one I watched was very interesting.
