I just moved to Brampton, the city in Ontario, Canada where they dump all the immigrants. This was my first week of going to high school here, and it's a lot different than the school I went to in Mississauga. A lot of things. That are screwed up. I know a thread similar to this was made recently (to which I contributed) but this is different in that I wish to discuss this particular issue.
Firstly, hats are not allowed. I know this is common, but it's really serious here. It's very strictly enforced, which I find ridiculous. Any kind of hat. They're militant about it. Today I sat all alone in the corner where I usually do, just minding my own business and eating my lunch. Suddenly a teacher walks up to me and tells me to take my hat off. I begrudgingly comply. When I ask her why I must remove my beloved chapeau, she just smiles and walks away. Later I asked my English/history teacher about it. His explanation was that a while ago a student was riding the bus with a hat that had a bandanna on it...WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH A GANG! Oh noes!
In the words of Yahtzee: "BULL. FUCKING. SHIT."My hat is just a black cotton thing with a generic white skull on it. This kind of hat has never been associated with any gang, ever. It's just a hat. What, do they think I'm hiding a gun under it or something? I don't even like guns (except in video games). My hat is too small to hide a gun under anyway. It would be much more efficient to hide a weapon in my long leather jacket, which has many deep pockets. But you don't see that banned (yet).
But wait folks, there's more! During lunch, you're not allowed to walk in the halls. Seriously. They have signs nailed onto the walls about it. They also have signs that say you're not allowed to "loiter" in the stairwells. Additionally, in the office there's a box. This kind of box I have never seen anywhere. It is apparently for dropping notes in...to tip the police off about criminal activity.
Really, education system? Really?
Am I just being butthurt over nothing, or am I on to something here? What I'm most upset about is the hat rule as I take much issue with my personal right and freedom to wear a hat being taken away for no apparent reason. I was thinking of getting a group together to campaign against the hat rule and maybe enact some more democratic education policies. What do you guys think about all this?
And sorry for the wall of text.
