I don't care about the cumulative amount, as in how many Platinum trophies I have etc, but I like seeing %100.

Basically I allways try and get them but don't care about my collection off them, there a great way to increase replay value but most devs don't take advantage of this and just make them tedious.

I'l admit that my OCD has caused me to become addicted to Trophy hunting, but I'm not doing any harm, The day that I let it effect my purchases is when it has gone too far.
Part of my dissertation actually argues that getting that sense of completion, completing a game 100% often means collecting all the achievements too now, or is used as the basis for getting 100%. This means that for those who have no interest in achievements are being excluded from this satisfaction.

Would you agree with that?
I wouldn't.

Finishing a game comes at the gamers discretion - not the devs. Satisfaction doesn't include achievements for me personally.

All I get from them is suggestions. If there's an achievement to do something that I like the sound of then I might try but other than that I wont go out of my way to do it.

No kind of point/leaderboard system has ever interested me outside of the arcade. I didn't care about my points score when I played Sonic or Streets of Rage, I don't care about the number of achievements that I have now.

I like 'em. They often get me to do things in games I wouldn't normally do, or set a challenge in a game that might be so challenging itself. I often go out of my way to get them, even though I might not go for 100%.

I'm still proud of my Demon's Souls Platinum.

We are excluded from the satisfaction.

But we value that satisfaction as 0, or near enough to so that the effort exceeds the reward.

I'm not sure you can holistically say that overall we get a lesser experience, as everyone will inherently feel different levels of satisfaction from different elements that are not necessarily easily quantified.

Depends on the game, if I really enjoy the game then I am more likely to hunt down all of the Achievements. Generally speaking, I don't think it hurts to have them as a part of a game.

I like getting achievements and knowing there's achievements there sometimes drives me to try stuff in games I might not ordinarily do to get them. I'm alsmo more likely to finish a game I've started if there's achievements confirming I did - unless I truly hate a game I can't really justify to myself "oh, well, I started this game but couldn't be bothered playing past chapter 1" before I move onto something else.

I also think having an aggregate total of my gaming accomplishments is generally good, though I don't feel like I necessarily have bragging rights over someone with a lower gamerscore, or that I should feel cowed by someone with a higher gamerscore. I can point to MY gamerscore and say "that's me, I did those things - for better or for worse".

Kind of like having a photo album.

Occasionally, I'll read an achievement and actually be interested in doing it, just because I think it sounds cool or fun. Or, if I just did something cool and it turns out that I earned an achievement for it, I'll be like, "hey, that's awesome."

Otherwise, I don't really care about them, other than the irrational small satisfaction I get for earning a fancy looking medal that I'll never look at again.

Couldn't care less

Though my real answer is that there are a handful of games where achievements enhance the experience. StarCraft 2 uses achievements to change how you play a mission and leads to a completely different experience. In Rock Band, trophies give additional direction beyond the story mode and random setlists.

The other 95% of games have wasted achievements that are typically just time sinks.

It's these 'Inspiring' achievements as I mentioned earlier in the thread that seem to generate the most interest or enjoyment. Whereas both unavoidable achievements, those that cannot be avoided as part of playing the game naturally or achievements which require a great deal of time to collect that generate the mixed response when it comes to achievements in general.

Interestingly, despite being unavoidable the achievement "Complete the game" which i mentioned in my questionaire has received higher interest than others in the same category. I suppose even though achievements which make u play different are preferred players still like to be recoginised for completing the campaign/story.

Interesting argument. This is something I will certainly try to discuss more in my research. Thank you for help with this.

Achievements, trophies do absolutely nothing for me. I just want to play the game, I dont care that the game is happy that I did somehting not even remotely stellar like the Became the Bat achievement in Batman A.C. I mean it's a scripted part of the game.. You cant avoid doing it and run around ar Bruce Wayne instead. Why award me for that?

I tend to get the ones that the game gives me and that's about it.

With certain games, if I enjoyed the experience enough, I try to get as many as I can before I get sick of it and stop playing.

When the game pisses me off to no end, like Wet, I get all of the Trophies.

I like them. The way I see it, they can enhance a good game, without any real drawbacks. They can add a little extra to a game's replay value, but if the game isn't worth replaying then I largely ignore them.

I only care if they provide tangible benefits, like the achievements in Mass Effect or Fallout: NV.

I'm quite a fan of them. Amongst other reasons that people have already mentioned, it's a little extra competition amongst my friends (who has the highest GS, most in X game, most games completed fully etc)

Achievements aren't for us tbh they are for developers to have more effective market research. For example they can see how many people finished a game if they bothered getting certain items or what skills and quests were the most popular.

We are just helping them to have an idea of how their game is played.

I think they're useless and stupid. I don't bother with them. I didn't know you could turn the fucking things off in your console settings though. *going to do that right now*

Can you detail what these particular benefits were? Was is specific to that particular game or was it a certain type of achievement? Thanks!

This is another topic I have looked into and there is certainly evidence that achievements are an effective market research tool. however I would also argue that, if designed correctly, achievements can potentially increase the players overall enjoyment of the game. For example some achievements promote an optional playstyle that you may not have thought of previously, or an achievement might hint at the existence of something you might have missed playing normally.
