I don't mind trophies/achievements in video games. I'd rather have the unlockables and cheat codes of old, but I don't mind them.

It's great for those times you pull off something amazing. Like that time I noscope headshotted a guy in CSS while we both were in the air. That earned me the achievement, kill someone midair while being midair.

Achievements are pretty good in the right hands but there are far too many for just completing the game (oblivion) and pointless collectibles (assassins creed) however there are some that are awesome and are real challenge to get like test of faith achievement in mirror's edge for not shooting anyone because it forces you to use only hand to hand mechanics and the parkour system to close up the enemies without them gunning you down.

I'm kinda indifferent. I won't go all achievement whore and not put down a game till I have every one of them but they're a nice addition for ideas of extra stuff to do in the game. I like them if they are actually achievements not just automatically given for getting further in the game. Also I prefer the steam version where they don't have a currency attached to them. People think gamerscore reflects how good you are as a gamer when it doesn't.

generally no i couldn't care less, however if it is one that has a unique method, such as a pacifist run or only use two something or others the entire play through i will generally have a bash at them where otherwise i probably wouldn't even have thought about it

I used to. I liked the idea of using them as a sort of all-games, world-spanning high score board. Then I realized that adding in achievements took away cheat codes and, it seems, split screen. I would much rather have kept the cheats and while I know split-screen is still around, it isn't nearly as prominent as it used to be. When you do try playing split-screen it almost seems like you get punished for doing so, same with the cheats.

Don't care, I set my own crazy goals. Though it's nice when the game awards me for something I didn't know it had an award for. For example, flying a 747 upside down under a bridge in Just Cause 2. I just wanted to do it, but then the game gave me a nice little acknowledgement of the awesomeness of flying a giant plane upside down under a bridge. :D

When achievements encourage different types of gameplay, or setting fun challenges, I like them. The Silent Hill HD Collecion had a good bunch, most of which are challenges that fall on just the right side of the fun scale, as well as encouraging players to get the different endings.

On the other hand, achievements that are collectables-based annoy the hell out of me, especially if getting the collectables gives you nothing but the achievement. The only time I don't mind it so much is if the game provides hints as to where they are. For instance, Bully: Scholarship Edition lets you unlock the rough locations of everything on the map; without that I wouldn't have bothered with the achievements.

I'm not a compulsive 1000G person, but if the achievements look doable and fun I'll go for it. They enhance good games, rather than saving bad ones. If the achievements look interesting or fun, but the game is terrible, I won't soldier on just for the achievements. I've only 1000G'd a few games, but I enjoyed all of them and the achievements were pretty easy.

i like them because they increase the replay value of a game, give me something to work for and it gives me an excuse to do my happy dance!

Didn't vote because I don't like saying "I love it!" However I do like them, but not for bragging rights or gamerscore really, I just take it as a challenge. I don't like the ones that you get automatically, though maybe the kind for beating the game or something similar, but I do enjoy the ones like "10 kills without taking damage" and similar, so the actual achievements will get me credit. That and finding very well hidden things or easter eggs.

I love achievements, BUT... I love them more when they are confined into the one game. Steam, Champions Online, even World of Warcraft, they all do this well, though admittedly there is a website that ranks how many achievements from various games people have, so I guess that's verging on GfWL territory there...

I love getting as many achievements in a single game as possible, and if the game has achievement points build into it but not combined with other games, such as Blizzard's games, I'll try to get a high achievement score. But the moment an achievement score is spread across multiple games ala GfWL, I don't care about the score anymore, as the score in those cases are just more examples of "Who spent the most money"

I also like it when achievements yield rewards, such as Blizzard games, what with SC2 portraits and WoW pets and mounts. As long as it doesn't yield gamechanging rewards that gives you a significant advantage over everyone else. That just sucks, and is almost as bad as ye olde DLC Weapon Packs.

I like it in Dead Rising, you get stuff for a lot of the achievements, and in Battlefield Bad Company i2, killing someone by putting a drill in there head.
I don't really like it when it is just "You beat a level!" unless it is done as a joke like in Eat Lead the Return of Matt Hazard (Pausing the game for one, also you get like three different achievements AFTER you beat the boss, one for a reveal, one for watching the credits, and one for mastering the nonexistent multiplayer)
Haha yes I have also played Eat Lead and the 'Pause the Game' Achievement in my questionnaire was inspired by that. Generally it was a summarisation of the unavoidable or very easy achievements present in many games and I was hoping to see how people feel about them. According to current results, not so much!

I love achievements. They're not "forced", they're optional things to reward people who want to play the game in different ways.

Achievements like:
"One Free Bullet" from HL2: Ep1: Can use only one bullet, for the whole game you have to use the gravity gun and clever use of traps and physics to kill enemies.

The Garden Gnome from HL2: Ep2 and Left4Dead2: Having to carry and babysit the gnome throughout the level/game provides an interesting challenge.

"To all the squirrels I've loved before" from World of Warcraft: Going around and /loving critters is hilarious and allows for some fun exploring.

"Yippie-Ki-Yay..." from Starcraft 2: Using the big friggin laser drill to steamroll the protoss base instead of burning through the vault door.
Its these 'Inspiring' Achievements which seem to be more popular among most gamers and makes me think if a game included only achievements like this (or at least a majority) would players be more inclined to replay the game compared to games with achievements such as 'Comeplete the game on easy/medium/hard' etc.

Like a lot of you, my answer is "depends on the achievement". If the achievements are fun to pursue or provide an interesting challenge, then great. I'll probably try to get them. If it's just grinding then I won't bother.

I really don't see the point of trying to maximise your gamerscore though since that is more of an indication that you have a lot of games, not that you're particularly good at any of them.

I also don't think you should get any achievements for just doing what you would normally do. An achievement for looking at the map screen is ridiculous. Another achievement for then looking at a different part of the map screen is so stupid it hurts my brain. (Stupid Dragon Age 2) Basically, you should have to go out of your way to get them, they shouldn't just shower you with them for deciding to play the game.

I wonder if it's a girl thing. most boys i know dont care for achs and trophies but they spur me on!
Most of the girls I have interviewed or discussed achievements with so far do infact like achievements and have quite a lot to say, however it will be difficult to get an accurate comparison on how either gender responds to achievements as 80% of participants so far have been male.

Perhaps this is a downside to sharing the questionaire via The Escapist, I dont know what the websites current audience is, or maybe this has a bigger reason. Difficult to tell. Lots of research indicates there are more girls that play video games than people are led to beleive after all.

Thats perfectly fine, the poll was added simply to get a quick response from those who werent very interested in participating in the thread or filling out the questionnaire.

Anyway as you say it seems to be a common concensus that unavoidable achievements add little to nothing to games, the exception being the 'Complete the Game' achievement.
