Achievments are fine. You don't need them to play a game, but I like them to be there sometimes. IDK, I never really pay attention to them much anyway.

Achievements add absolutely nothing to the value of a game. On the other hand, they don't really detract either.

Chalk me up for the 'couldn't give a flying shit' bracket.

I like them. They add bit of replay-ability.

Course, I play my ps2 games all the time, and they don't have achievements. So maybe I should go for the 'i don't care' option.

I don't mind the casual achievements that you only need yourself and dedication to obtain. But the ones that mix up with online gaming that have people saying "Ok guys nobody do this/everybody do this because I want my achievement" are just crappy *cough*MW2's*cough* The ones where people scream at you because you actually wanted to play a game in a way that makes you have a good time instead of creating a chore out of a video game so one overly vocal mofo can get a "bloop" on their screen saying that they got 25 more points added to their gamer score.
I say Achievements you can do on your own without mixing up with others....awesome!
Achievements that may/and usually cause you to be a dillweed to others and often "rage" and scream into your mic.......no bueno!

I think its another way to get you "hooked" and ready for more DLC. If you like that, then its OK.

They are good but no online achivements that make you grind in an online system that you wouldnt get into. But then again I think its better when you can get the multiplayer acheivables online or offline but the fact that we are debating this question again on this very site for the SECOND time make the issue self explanitory, so I 'd say yes but in the sense of its changed it.

I love the achievement system. I'm proud of my Gamerscore and my gaming abilities that allow me to complete some of the trickier ones.
Plus, as a kid, didn't you always have some jerk kid who ALWAYS tried to one up you on the topic of video games, even to the point of it being unbelievable?
People do that less these days because of the achievement tracking system.

Saying that achievements are an issue is like saying all bragging rights rewards should be removed from games. Things like Prestige, ranks, bonuses for beating uberhard optional bosses and even simple things like alternate credits. All of these things exist simply to say "congrats, look at what you did" when playing the game specific ways or just playing it enough. That's all achievements are, they're just coded into a form everyone can see.

I go for achievable/non-grind achievements. Honestly I think they take away from actual self generated satisfaction. A constant need for the game to tell you, you are awesome is something common in our generation sadly.

I'm more of the mind that they shouldn't be for things you HAVE to do to complete the game, though they can be for completing the game as well. They should either be something that is above and beyond, or something unusual you do. I don't want to get an achievement for beating the tutorial level, since even a blind retarded monkey could do that in most games, but giving an achievement for killing a tank with a frying pan (L4D2; ok, it was any melee weapon) is a fun and hilarious achievement. I also like ones that are a good trick to learn anyway: punching a hunter as he pounces and killing a witch with one shot are good examples of useful skills turned into achievements (L4D).

I don't think there's anything wrong with the achievement system other than it will make me want to play GTA4 a bit more often than a freshly downloaded FF8 or, a newly bought Lunar something something but those last two examples are JRPGs I'm playing on my PSP so they might as well not exist [in the minds of some other gamers]

What it really comes down to is your own personal level of obsessive compulsive disorder. While many people will gladly play through say, Halo 3 or, Fallout 3 on the 360, the OCD sufferer with a 360 and PS3 will be more likely to play Oblivion on the 360 than on the PS3 due to the PS3's lack of Oblivion trophy support. I am one of those strange people who enjoyed the brotherhood missions so much when my 360 was still alive that I got a used PS3 version despite the fact that I wouldn't get an intangible trophy for having beaten everyone in the arena or, defeated Merunes Dagon. Of course I probably wouldn't have beaten Fallout 3 that fifth time on if not for the trophies >.>;;

I agree with this. The achievements that require the player to go over and beyond the call of duty are the good ones. Alas, I can't expect developers to come up with 1000g's worth of exciting situations.

I love achievements/trophies. Hell I would be more inclined to play my Wii if it had some sort of achievement system. And as much as I love them I do see there is problems with them. Mainly in MP achievements/trophies. Look I don't care if you found all the feathers or all the flags or whatever. Good for you. You did that on your time and your dime. You want to invest a godforsaken amount of time in getting the 1000 or platinum in FF13 you get 2 thumbs up from me. When I log into a deathmatch dammit I want to play a deathmatch. I don't want to play the hokey pokey at a CP. I don't want to waste my valuable time going from match to match looking for people who actually want to play over those who wanna boost. Either stop making online achievements or start making boosting servers so when I join a random ranked match to try and earn those achievements using my own skill and not cheating the system I can. Without having to worry about getting kicked over and over.

it's fine, if a game doesn't have them, I treat it the same as I would if it did, they are all fun to play after all.
