This idea just came into my head as both of the options annoy me but I find that clever people acting stupidly for whatever reason (Not getting called a nerd, attention) is more irritating than when somebody less clever pretends to know everything.

The simple fellow trying to claim he's a smartarse is more irritating since any attempt to call them out on it will usually result in them getting more vocal about how they are in fact right (you're just too stupid to understand apparantly).
The smart guy pretending to be dumb is usually comparatively harmless (most of the time anyway).

People who are clever and act like stupid, are just idiots, although i do it some time, though its more lazyness that stupidness.
But people who are stupid and act clever are worse, cause if you try and say that they are wrong, they do something even stupider which makes the situation worse.

Acting more stupid than you are (no matter how smart you really are) is fun, as long as you do it in moderation and at appropriate times.
Acting smarter than you are (no matter how smart you really are) is just arrogant and annoying.
I think everyone does both of the above sometimes even if they try not to so it's not that big a deal unless you do it a lot, but acting smarter than you are just gets annoying a lot quicker.

Interesting results so far. I just think that people dumbing themselves down to become more popular or to make themselves is far more annoying than a simple minded person exaggerating their intelligence.

Stupid people acting clever. Well, to elaborate, stupid people continuing to act clever even when they've been called out.
I once had an argument with a lady about what HTML stood for. Even when shown proof to the contrary, she kept adamantly trying to tell me it stood for hotmail. I guess I can say it's funny now, but at the time, I felt like killing someone.

I agree that it can be fun in moderation, and of course everybody has their stupid moments - I just think it should be done for reasons other than to be accepted socially by a 'cooler' crowd.Hurr Durr Derp said:

The people who try to act clever when they aren't are much more arrogant and annoying to me at least.They act like there hot shit for knowing something and are very adamant about it. This bugs me to know end.

Dumb people that act clever... it's really not that hard to use big words, but I know tons of people who think using big words make them smart.
One thing I can't stand is people saying that they're smart... nothing makes you sound more arrogant. Even if you do make all A's and can sit down with me and explain completely explain the workings of the universe, the second you call yourself smart, you just ruined yourself in my eyes. It's like telling people how talented or good looking you are...

smart people are capable of dumbass attacks, and dumbass people are capable of smartass attacks. when it happens to smart people, it can be kind of funny, but stupid people have a knack of screwing everything up and that is never amusing. unless they do something so bad it earns them a Darwin award.
