people who know things, but try too hard to apply it and often end up in face palm worthy situations

I think everyone can be prone to doing this at times.

Well yeah, thats how i survive college

but i mean in real life situations, in order to try and seem more dominant within a discussion rather than taking the back seat for a minute

I suppose so.

Why can it be annoying if smart people act dumb? Please give me a example, I have never encountered such a scenario.

A girl i know often pretends she can't count past 13 properly. She also will often tell any male she encounters to "not use so many big words, she doesn't understand." She actually happens to be quite intelligent, but in the event of a male being present reverts to stupidity mode.

If they're smart but act dumb, they probably feel insecure about how people will take their intelligence or want to fit in with a group of people and so dumb it down to not draw attention to themselves.

If they're dumb but try to act smart, then they're just arrogant and misinformed. Really, the question answers itself.

I agree with 1notixikated and when you have a friend you know is intelligent who pretends not to know things so people either pay more attention to them or think they're cooler.

2nd option for me friend. A country Bumpkin saying he knows Theoretic Physics while also saying that he knows several Martial Arts.......Yeah. THAT is more annoying than the vice-versa. At least he is INTELLIGENT.

Someone stupid acting clever is worse, to me, because they're stupid. Acting clever isn't going to make them any smarter, it'll just show how stupid they actually are.

Both options annoy me, though.

The most annoying imo would be people who are clever but act like they're stupid. People who are stupid but act like they're clever at least have the excuse of being stupid

I usually find stupid people that act clever more annoying simply because most of the clever people that act stupid that I know act so for the humor value, whereas the people who are stupid that try to act clever are merely lying to themselves. It is however, rather entertaining to raise a few arguments with the stupid people acting clever and to watch them proceed to stumble about since they lack the confidence to admit fault in their argument, a trait truly clever people would have.

I used to act stupid, I stopped, because I didn't like being ridiculed for it, but I did it so that essentially, my teachers would stop riding me for top quality work every day. Anyways, stupid people who act smart annoy me more.

Nothing is quite so painful as a stupid person who thinks they're clever, when really everything they say and do is excruciating - excruciating that is because social norms prohibit me from simply smacking them really hard whenever they do that. There's nothing wrong with acting less intelligent than you really are if it's played for laughs, but stupidity putting on airs is pure brain poison.

This idea just came into my head as both of the options annoy me but I find that clever people acting stupidly for whatever reason (Not getting called a nerd, attention) is more irritating than when somebody less clever pretends to know everything.

Clever acting stupid usually do it intentionally. While stupid people who dont have a clue acting clever is just damn annoying, specially when they are on a rank above you and try to make you look silly or lame.
