I act stupid a lot and do some things I probably shouldn't like teabag fire hydrants or pretend to be a suicide bomber but in reality it's all just for comedic value. I could care less what those popular douche bags are doing. Any way I know a girl who tries to act funny and smart but in reality she has to ask the teacher for help all the time and still hangs onto the thought that juvenile things are funny. She says she sees ghost to so I think shes a little messed up in the head. Choice two pisses me of the most because I've gotten into countless arguments with people like that.

Since I'm guessing we're all railing against the tendency of some people to 'play dumb', I'll weigh in; I sort of have a unique perspective.

I'm an industrial roofer. I read a lot, I'm involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism, and I refuse to drink beer that's not darker than urine-coloured. I don't have a criminal record for petty assault, theft or mischief. I refuse to watch professional sports (largely because I'd rather play than watch), and I can't stand reality television.

Most of my co-workers are under-educated, drink Budweiser, have criminal records, think pro sports and reality TV are the penultimate expression of human culture, and think that Maxim and spank mags count as being literate.

Sometimes, you play dumb to fit into certain societal settings, and sometimes you do it do gain an advantage over your surroundings. Whether or not I'm actually particularly smart is irrelevant, since my job would prove very difficult if I constantly had co-workers pissed at me, because they felt that I was being condescending or constantly one-upping them.

I'm more annoyed by people who are smart, but act stupid. That's a total waste of abilities.
People who are stupid but act smart can be funny as hell at times.

Stupid people acting clever, definitely.

This one is hard to explain, but try and bear with me. A few people that I know are very, very dim, so they try and make up for it by switching larger and more complicated words into their sentences to try and sound smarter, yet they don't even know what that word they switched in means and the sentence ends up making no sense.

Begin Rant:

You know what? I hate people who are clever act like they are stupid because they think it's cute. It's a trend that is happening amongst girls/women and it's very annoying. A girl I knew in high school who was extremely SMART acted ditzy in front of a guy because she thought it was cute.
It was so... ugh.
I mean, an honest mistake is one thing, but to act like a complete dumbass because you think it makes you cute is just STUPID.

End Rant.

If a dumb person acts clever, you can just correct them, if a smart person acts dumb, it's annoying.

I find that people who don't know what they're talking about but act like the authority on the subject are far more annoying than people who are in fact knowledgeable but play dumb about something, unless they're playing dumb to fit in with the popular crowd or something to that end. Being smart but playing dumb is a good way to throw people off their guard in a debate or some other similar situation.

That waste of abilities is exactly what annoys me - if you have the potential to do incredible things why not make use of it?

People who actually are stupid, but refuse to admit they don't know what they are talking about, just so they can pretend to not be stupid, annoy me almost more than any other kind of person.
