So what'll it be? I'm writing this in response to the other thread, since FFs after VII are all mediocre.

I umm am not sure? I know what was called 3 in the states was 6 in japan (or so I'm told). The one with 'Terra' on SNES That's the one that gets my vote.

Obviously FFVI is the best one here, because the ones before that were (and are) trash. It is still, however, surpassed by the far-superior FFIX and X.

I never really liked IV that much, it's okay, but VI was one of the first games I've ever played and it just resonated with me. It also inspired a lifelong love of Steampunk.

The FFX part of your statement could be a punchline.

5. I love combining abilities of different classes together to see what works best for me.

haven't played II, but 5 is the best imo, and although many disregard mystic quest as a FF, it was a great game in its own right and has an awesome soundtrack

Final Fantasy is still the best. Mostly because when you started it up there was a good chance you were not coming out unharmed. The rest of them are too full of super weapons and summons.

It was a tough choice between IV and VI but then I remembered that Kefka and General Leo were awesome. I loved Six's cast in genral, 4 is my second faviorite though

As much as I liked IV, V and VI, I'm going to have to go with FFI. I have no bloody idea why but when I got it for the GBA I ended up playing through it 4-5 times, with all but one of those being with only one class, including a 4 White Mage run and beating the bonus dungeons in each playthrough. It must have done something right for me to mindlessly play through it over and over...

FFIII(US)
or as it's now know, FFVI

But it was FFIII when I played it, and I was an RPG snob. I loved it to death. It's a toss up to me as to whether it's the best SNES game for me.
It had a huge world, and a compelling plot that didn't center around one mopey pretty boy, instead, most of the characters had fully fleshed out backstories and motivations. You could probably say Terra was the central character, but really, it didn't force a main protagonist on you.
Plus it had my favorite score from the SNES era.
And it had a overly campy, but memorable villain, and probably the most memorable villain in the first 6 games.

I LOVED FF 2's development system where everything had an experience bar. Each weapon became stronger in the hands of the character and stat depending on how frequently it was used. Aside from a few wrinkles in the system it was BRILLIANT and I want to see another RPG implement that system with more refined mechanics. I also give it props for having a good story or being the first serious storyline. I don't care what anyone says, it was simple and yet effective and it works well.

FF 4 had a great story, cast of characters, and good overall gameplay. Each character served their purpose, the story was great, and I really liked the whole twist with Golbez despite how "cliche" it may seem these days. Golbez is also one of my favorite classic villains, he really looked and played the part.

But the all time favorite classic FF is 6. I find little to no fault in the game. Excellent gameplay, meaningful and charming characters, a truly terrifying villain that induced that Heath Ledger joker feel in you, and an amazing story. Terra is still one of my favorite FF characters in the entire series and Kefka is just...Kefka. A demented human being that represents the epitome of all the negative aspects of humanity. Also extra points for being a villain that wins....to an extent, still destroyed the world though.
