I bought a laptop, and used it for gaming.
Still have it.
It can't even play HL2: E2 that well!
GOD DAMN IT! I WANT MY DESKTOP BACK! WHY DID THEY HAVE TO SELL IT?!?!

Alienware isn't horribly overpriced, but they are overpriced.
If you don't care about the fancy case they're horribly overpriced. :)

I voted alienware, but in a few years it will be useless wereas as long as people keep making ps3 games the playstation will remain.

Heating was the problem I had with my last laptop. What would you guys suggest I do to minimize any and all chances of having my system melt again? (For the record, I kept my laptop on and in between two pieces of wood to allow for massive heat buildup. A stupid move, I know, so I'll be keeping this one somewhere slightly less retarded. Probably between 2 slightly more distant pieces of wood.)
Get a Zalman Laptop Cooler, nice chunk of Aluminum, with some quiet fans assisting airflow.

Again, game developers/publishers don't give a crap if you have the latest hardware or not, how much you spent on your system, or if you bought it because you liked the front cover art...as long as you buy it.

Alienware is notorious for building their PC/laptops off of cheap parts that break easily.

Plus they have the worse customer service known to man...0o
See, that's odd, I personally own an M15x and the build quality is very high, no loose, crappy parts that have broken or anything like that, and when I have had to call for customer/tech support, they've usually been very helpful and quite polite.

It might just be me, but where hardware is concerned I always seem to get lucky.

Get a desktop since you dont seem to be in might need of portability, for the same price as that overpriced laptop you could get a gaming rig that will last at least another 4-5 years

Should I paint my case red as well?
Don't forget the flame decals and the go-faster stripes!
They go without saying.

Now I've just got to find a place to mount the chrome skull.

I don't think you'll need to advanced of a computer to run SC2, the last i read, i think you only need a 1.7ghz processor and like a gig of ram.

I agree that you should save your PS3 and most of your games and spend half the money buying an ASUS. I own one and I love it. Probably wont be as powerful as the Alienware, but it will last longer than any other laptop you'll find (in my experience). And people who say that these things are obsolete in a year are full of shit, quite frankly. As long as you take good care of it, inside and out, it will be running new games for several years to come, even if you'll have to turn the settings down a bit.

Only get a MAC if you really want to give up entirely on PC gaming, which I don't think is the way to go.

Well the based that PC games are constantly increasing the specifications for your computer stick to your PS3 and buy a mac.
Or try and find a laptop that's capable of doing a bit of both without dying for the same price you'll be spending on a mac.
Orrr build a desktop though if you were planning on taking the laptop to school lugging a desktop round all day could be a minor challenge.

I loved my old ASUS L5. Fucking thing was heavy enough to beat someone to death with... and well made enough that it probably would have survived the experience.

*grumbles about a certain ***** ex who now has it*

As a ps3 owner I have to suggest the game laptop. Especially if you want Starcraft 2.

The ps3 is kind of cool and it has some great games but sony support of it is just plain horrible; in fact they seem to take away more features than they add and those that they do add are usually completely worthless ripoffs from other consoles like achievement trophies.

However, Alienware is also really overpriced for what it is. I bet you can find a comparable laptop on newegg for a third of the price.

Personally, I'm hoping Gaikai will be an affordable alternative to both.

Ya, I'd get the laptop, since you really can't do anything else other than play games on a PS3 anymore

Considering you already own a PS3, I'd really recommend sticking with it and getting a much cheaper laptop. Selling your PS3 and games might get you... at most $600? You can definitely find a laptop for $1000 then that does everything you need but not games.

From what I've heard, and to some extent experienced, laptops make bad gaming rigs (over heating). If you want to game on PC a desktop is the smarter choice.

And as to the console vs PC cost, PCs are definitely more expensive, but not by a ton. I just bought a PS3 slim when they came out and love it to death, but I'm also about to build a gaming PC (had a cheapish quality one and blew the vid card) and so far I've priced it out to about $800 and the only difference from this guy's laptop is an 3.33ghz i5 dual core since quad is pretty much useless at this point.
