It possibly could, but it is also likely that if prayer did work it would only work in cases that the person doing the praying felt strongly about or had a personal connection to.
This was actually brought up in a movie called Bruce almighty in which one of scenes near the end, the main character is involved in an accident and god says that he'd save him if the guy prayed.
guy prays for world peace
god's response (paraphrased) "Okay, now try pray again not like your'e trying to become Miss Universe)
guy prays for this woman he likes to be happy.
...Then I actually can't remember what happened next but it ended happily (it was a Jim Carey movie- I think)
I probably won't pray by myself as I am terrible at coming up with the words for them But I hope that Allison gets better with no further complications.
