So, I've been seeing this game advertised EVERYWHERE, but I just can't decide if I want to get it. It looks pretty cool, but it also seems like they just copied a lot from Mass Effect. I wanted to know how people who actually played the game felt, so please express your opinions.

Edit: By the way, I LOVED Mass Effect 1 and 2. I really love those rpg/action stuff.

Seen this yet? http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/7648-Review-Alpha-Protocol

If so, I apologize. I've not actually played the game itself but from what I hear from friends in the city, don't buy it.

If you REALLY enjoy RPG games mixed with some action (a la Deus Ex or Vampire Bloodlines) like I do, and you're getting the PC or Xbox versions (I hear the PS3 one is pretty shoddy, as per the escapist review), then yes, I wholly recommend it. I'm halfway through my second playthrough and things can change a LOT, and I like that.

Otherwise, give it a rent if you think it looks cool, or wait for a price drop (it'll happen soon, AP is not a game for everyone)

edit: 2 things I'll ad

1.
also seems like they just copied a lot from Mass Effect
Moreso from the first ME. Remember how in the first ME if you didn't have points in a weapon type, you couldn't shoot for shit, and if you didn't have points in charm/intimidate you couldn't talk for shit? It's almost exactly like that :p Also the conversation system is somewhat similar. Though instead of having a general idea what your character is going to say, you only set his stance. Like cocky, professional, "fuck off", etc. This has some advantages and disadvantages. Overall I like it about the same, less idea of exactly how you're going to do things, though that is also the disadvantage.

2. Sweet avatar, I love those books.

I enjoy it, but only because I love story. You need to overlook glitches and some control problems. And the PC version is a bit shoddy.

It's not a bad game. Some of the controls are a bit wonky, but after a few hours of gameplay, they become easier to handle.

I would not call it an RPG though, as I've already beaten it twice in the 4 days I've own it. If this were an RPG, I would still be playing the first time around. I would call it a espionage game that has RPG elements in it.

I would not buy it. I'd rent it first.

IMO it's underrated. After a little leveling up it gets really enjoyable, especially if you specialize in stealth.

Of course I said it was shit, during the parts that were even mildly interesting (the ones with Sarren) all I could think of was "Locutus of borg!"

Really? I haven't seen it at all, or I at least have a shitty memory. Probably the latter.
That is a manly avatar ;)

OT: I'm waiting for the price to drop. Since its made my Obsidian I have no doubt the story is fantastic. Also since its made by Obsidian I have no doubt it will be very buggy. And possibly have a bad ending.

Just going on what their past games were like. Either way, I'd say wait for a price drop. Thats what I'm doing.

Yeah, I spent about a week straight reading all twelve books about a month ago. It was an excellent use of a week.

Shame it has all the glaring glitches I read about. I bet it's still good fun.
I gotta' respond to this. I played NWN 2 and KOTOR 2, I've got a lot of experience in Obsidian games, so I know how buggy their games usually are. And for the pc version, I can say these are rare. The only one that I noticed that was glaring is that sometimes your hair will change to the default "buzzed" hairdo, despite what you may have set it as. It goes away on loading screens or when you start your next convo. Also there's some odd ones I'm seeing now with the special stealth talents that seem to make guards mentally handicapped, but other than that.. for an Obsidian game, incredibly well put together.

Its defeinetly not worth the buy. Maybe rent it if your looking for a fun story that you REALLY get to make the choices. but the gameplays just kinda of a pain in the rear.
