I don't know how to describe this, so just bear with me.

Let's say there's a room with a TV in it, the TV is on but the volume is muted or at least so low you can't hear it. Can you walk past that room and still KNOW the TV is on, without looking in?

It's like this extremely high-pitched hum or buzz or something, but I've always been able to tell if there was a TV on somewhere nearby, even if there was no sound.

I'd always assumed everyone could "feel" that, but only recently people are telling me they've never heard of this. Like, they could be standing right in front of a TV that was on but had no sound or picture, and they swore it wasn't on.
I know what you mean. I hear it as well, I always described it as hearing the static on the screen a sort of high pitch whine.
But then I actually got my hearing tested and my hearing is apparentally abnormally good.

All the time... the weirdest thing is:
My tv sort of plays a little tune when booting up...
but only in form of an electronic ringing.

You mean a CRT, right?
You're normal, they all make a high pitch buzzing sound.

Depending on how old the tv is, I can.. but also, you won't be able to hear that sound as much when you get older.

I can hear a slight noise too. It's those freaky people who sit there trying to turn the tv back on that need fixing...XD

You can usually feel the static. Especially if you rub against it. Either that or heat ... especially from plasmas.

Edit: does anybody feel weird being close to LED tv's? Like their skin tingles... and your eyes just suddenly start hurting?

Yea, it actually used to irritate me in college. My roommate had a habit of turning the cable or ps3 off but not the tv and I could "hear" that it was still on in the next room.

A lot of them have that high-frequency 'ring' and there's also the glowing screen. Even if the TV is on an out-put that isn't connected to anything, you'll get some sort of glow. Also: the LED near the base will be either green or, white. If I'm walking past a room and a TV is on I wouldn't notice the LED I admit but you'd still pick up on some clue or another.

It's because of the voices in the television. The door is made of static, but you can hear them singing behind it. They will fly to the sun together with all the fragments. I will see again I will see again.

Yes, I hear it too. It can get really annoying with the older tv's who do this ringing really loudly. You're normal.

Younger people can hear it more easeally than older because of how our ears function. as you grow older you hear less high pitched sounds...for example there are some sounds teens can hear and adultes cant so in front of some stores where teens make a scene and just sit there this sound will get blasted so that they leave and they cant really report it because most people they would report it too cant hear it either

Yes, I hear the frequency too. Even good TVs are the same with me, but they do tend to make that whine

Yes I can hear it. I remember when the washing machine was making an annoying noise, similar to that (something like the bearing was going), and my mum didn't really believe me when I kept moaning about the noise as she couldn't hear it.

Eventually the noise got to a lower pitch, then she realised there was a noise there.

If I'm around a constant whine-type noise, most of the time I end up filtering it out. I'm pretty good at filtering out constant noise, so the noises don't tend to bother me, unless it's of particular frequencies (at the top range of my hearing, or there is a pretty high one lower down that annoys me a lot).
At uni I used to be able to easily fall asleep despite the noise of the fan in my computer at the time, as I would just stop hearing the noise after a short amount of time. Irritated the heck outta my then-bf if I ever left it on when he was there (couldn't tune out the noise)

OP: that's normal but don't worry, you may still be a freak. I don't know you well enough.

I'm greatful that the hum is softer with the hdtvs. Old tube TVs I could hear from the other side of the house.

Mycologist said:
The noise often heard from CRT TVs is the high frequency whine from the high voltage transformer used for the tube. Tends to be worse with older TVs as the ferrite material for the transformer gets weaker and so it's more likely that you'll hear it whining with the strain. You're probably less likely to hear a sound with LCD TVs, as while they still use high frequency transformers, they don't need the high voltage that a CRT needs, so the primaries don't have as much current, and so are less likely to make the ferrite whine.

Electro-nerd babbling over...
That's the long and short of it. Aside from my favorite games looking like utter shit on my CRT set, this is the biggest reason why I upgraded to LCD.

No man, you're no freak, I know exactly what you mean. It's like a dull kind of hum that's strangely audible but you can't tell if its really something loud far away or just the silence, and your mind has been overtaxed lately and are sort of listening "too much"

I recognize it now, though. Always know that if its on or off- my roommate still leaves the TV on a lot, and just leaves the room. Don't know why. It's so simple to just turn it off

You mean the mosquito? If you're over 30 you can't hear it, the older you are the lest frequencies you can hear, only kids can hear that one. They sometimes use it in shopping malls to annoy teenagers causing trouble.
