British TV Gems: Doctor Who, Skins, QI, The Inbetweeners, Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You, New Tricks, Hustle, Luther

American TV Gems: Scrubs, The Simpsons, The Big Bang Theory, House (although the best character is played by a Brit)

I am British but it's not so much patriotism that makes me likes British TV more, but more availability of said programmes.
Luther is awesome!

it's like someone took Taggart, took out all the shit dialogue and production values and injected Stringer Bell!
YES. The reverse murder mystery works so well...and that girl <3

British is better. The American version of "Life on Mars" cemented my opinion on this.
(I'm Aussie by the way). Mythbusters is good, but remember the concept is Australian. Simpsons is also good, mainly because they try everything.

Gunna hold my hands up and give this one to the Brits. Ashes to Ashes was, although DI Drake annoyed the life out of me for the first series with her 'IT'S NOT REAL' shenanigans, absolutely genious. On the other hand I don't think I could get by without my weekly fix of Fillion in Castle.

Slightly OT but Eccleston was sooo much better than Tennant

And out version of Red Dwarf was far superior.
I have (probably thankfully) never heard of or seen the American Red Dwarf.

Anyways, I'd say British shows tend to be better. But America has the X-Files and Firefly so it's a hard choice. But Britain has Monty Python's Flying Circus and the real Red Dwarf and tends to use people who look like real people, not makeup heavy "this is the perfect body" kind of people.

Scot in the US now for 10 years
Some great TV on both sides - but all of my US favorites see to get cancelled due to focus on advertising revenue..... yes I would list Firefly as one of those

US TV also tends to be more cautious in terms of satire and political correctness - which is very obvious at times.

I only really watch American comedies nowadays. American shows of any other genre generally have a bigger budget, but I find that they're obsessed with convoluting the plot to extend a series. I loved some shows like the Shield and I enjoyed Lost until I gave up on it but I don't think America has understood when shows should just be allowed to lie on their laurels.

American comedies are great and I love them. I love the vulgarity of South Park and in the mood, I can sit and watch the brain-dead humour of shows like Friends. But I'm English and I think I just get the British sense of humour. I admit both have a lot of duds, but British comedy just seems to age better. Bar topical quiz shows, British comedies seem to age better since they don't seem to rely on current events so heavily.

Clearly there are some original American shows, but I'm constantly surprised to find out just how much of American prime-time TV is recycled from Britain. This seems to be especially true for 'reality' series.

I don't know whether I need to apologize to the British for pointing that out or demand an apology from them for creating that crap in the first place.

Im gonna say Brits do the better comedies and the yanks do better action, sci fi and drama. Of course there are exceptions like scrubs, arrested development, south park and doctor who.

I'd say americna tv can be better but then they always go and cancel all the good stuff and let really crap shows like Lost or 24 run on longer than even the people that like them want it to

Sorry, but that was asked for. :)

To the question though, it's like comparing curry and chilli. Both are great in their own way.

British TV, mainly because of commercials. My god, the amount of commercials in American TV is truly ridiculous!

I don't get British TV on my network provider, so I suppose by default I like American TV better. It does have serious flaws, like drawing a series that should have ended long ago (The American version of The Office was my favorite show until just recently, when I realized they were totally out of ideas.) I hardly watch TV anymore anyway, mostly just stand-up comedy at night before I go to sleep. Still, we have Futurama, so....
