I am not sure if you heard the news but they are raising tuition here like crazy especially in California. How expensive is univeristy over there?
Currently about £3000 per annum, being raised to £9000 PA in the next few years.
Not for the scots! Haha, well unless you study outside scotland. But we have a lot of good universities anyway, so it's all good.

Well, after a year at State University of New York at New Paltz, I can safley say No. There was more partying at my "home" uni in Scotland and at the one Frat party I was able to get into they only had two kegs of luke warm, local, cheep and not so cheerful beer.

But of course this is a State university in the middle of nowhere 1 1/2 hours away from Manhatten. A bigger/more prestigious university may be different.

Did you do some sort of exchange?

Yep, I can't speak for other universities in the UK (but its probably the same). But my university has links with about 6 US universities ranging from "liberal arts" to those specialising in engineering. I just applied to go on the exchange program and then went through the simple task of applying to the US uni that I wanted of those 6 (which was a foregone conclusion). My university sorted everything out, all I needed to do was get a visa and pay for things like getting there and for the usual things like books and accomodation. It was an extrodinarly simple process.

I have gone to a university for 6 years now, and I can say from my experience, absolutely not. Now, there are pockets where the stereotype is status quo, but it is not the norm.

For a potential Oxbridge candidate i'm surprised you're even asking this question. I don't attend an American university so i carn't really say, but it's safe to assume that attending an American univerity isn't going to be like Animal House. Wherever you go, they'll be a student party scene, i imagine the biggest party scenes can be found in the urban areas.

Also, make sure you can afford to go to an American university, they cost a bomb.

What does that come out to in US dollars? about $4500.00 a year. Wow, that is not that bad. Even if they did raise it to 9000 pounds, that's what like around 14,500 US dollars? Which isn't that bad either, for a year. Some of the respected universities in California are going up in the high 20 thousand and some past 30 thousand a year.

The standard of living is high that parties may happen at the 99 cent stores more than universities.

It really just depends, though a majority of schools in the country don't look like that at all. Sure, there are party animals at every school, but people paying that much for school tend to take it a little more seriously than movies will depict.

Less than a generation ago university tuition was free, i think ideally most students would think that is how things should be. If the protests in London are anything to go by, we're not happy about this tuition fee rise at all.

Tuition free? what's that like? I can understand the protest. I gotta start reading more global news. I didn't know that was happening.
