I always wear a seatbelt. And having been in a car-totalling, airbag-deploying accident, I rather think it's worth it.

I'm not American, so i shouldn't even be in this thread/poll.
But i just had to comment that the poll button opinion was awesome. I mean, i always click on a poll-thread, even if i don't really care what's being posted there. I just want to vote...
And "Seatbelts are for communists" made me laugh.
I have to say, that's a lot of funniness in one poll. Well done, lad!

Anyways, i do always wear a seatbelt. I mean, why shouldn't I? They save lives.
The sad thing is, I have once heard that argument from an American, stringing seatbelt requirements to big government.

I always wear a seatbelt. I'm used to it not to mention you can get a ticket if you're not wearing one here in the U.S.

I always wear mine. It's illegal to drive without wearing one (at least in New Jersey.)

I live in the U.S. and I never see anyone not wearing seatbelts, so I am forced to conclude that OP's friend is the kind of person who has only avoided natural selection for this long by pure luck.

Also I feel compelled to weigh-in on seatbelt laws... they should only apply when there is more than one person in the car. The only people your flying, idiot body is likely to injure are your passengers, and the chance of your body doing serious damage to another vehicle in the event of a collision is infinitesimally small.

Okay, context: I have a mate who lived in the US for most of his young life, moved here about a year ago. Every time he gets in my car he complains about having to wear a seatbelt.

"Ugh they're so uncomfortable, nobody at home wore them, this stupid country etc."

Why is there such hatred for the things? Sure, it's not as comfortable as doing without, but neither is lying on the hot road with bits of glass embedded in your freshly peeled skin.

Perhaps I'm just used to having to wear one at all times, but I honestly don't see why a piece of fabric designed to save your life is such a big imposition to put on when you drive.

Edit: Looking into this, I discovered an interesting little Tidbit: Apparently, the reason that there are so many Air Bag related injuries in the US (compared to the rest of the world) is because to achieve the standard US safety rating, the air bags have to be deployed much faster (and therefore much more forcefully) than the European/World air bag deployment time, to compensate for the possible lack of seat belts.
many states require it now, which I don't believe in, but yes I wear a seatbelt. Better question, why do people smoke, smoking more often kills people than lack of seatbelts. human beings are far too often entirely unconvinced in their own mortality.

Agreed. A large percentage of the U.S. is mentally retarded. This is why we keep having to drop our standards in public schools (the tards breed faster).

"But it's uncomfortable" Yeah, til you get used to it maybe.

I throw my car around a fair bit and feel extremely out of place without a seat belt. I don't let passengers ride without a seat belt.

I remember I was taught this when I did the introductory traffic course: If you sit in the back, using the seatbelt is even more important than when you're in the front. Why? Because the people in the front seat probably appreciate not having a grown person flying towards the back of their seat at 80 km/h.....
He hit the nail on the head here. In the event of a catastrophic impact, I do not want an unguided projectile in my car. I'll also seatbelt large objects down (laptops, computers, other things that I wouldn't want flying around). While it may not be 100% effective, whatever force it does take from the possible projectile is a bonus.

Wear them on Highway , normally don't wear them in the city . Say whatever you want , but at 50km/hour in the city limit , I don't really see the danger.

I always wear my seatbelt - I mean, why wouldn't you? It's just the smart thing to do. Oh yes, also not wearing one is against the law. This person the OP describes sounds like an idiot who is making my fellow countrymen look bad.

Wait, really? Well, i suppose all nations have some not-as-bright people.
I really can't see any negative effects of wearing one, and i doubt wearing one will turn me into a commie.

I wear them. I'm actually so used to them that I notice it more when I'm on the public buses or the school shuttles and wearing them isn't an option (ergo, they're not installed). You'd think those are places they would be available, especially with the giant panels of windows on either sides and large number of metal objects around for convenient smashing into.

No offense, but your friend sounds entitled and retarded. Also, like he comes from one of the rare states where it's not seriously enforced if you don't wear a seatbelt, or doesn't ride in the front of vehicles much. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seat_belt_legislation_in_the_United_States implies to me that it's pretty common that they're required now, and the states I drive in it is required.

If they all have something against seatbelts it probably stems from the "pepsi generation" and the rise of the automobile, lots of deaths in crashes due to poor saftey and such back in those days. Although thats just an outsiders look on things, might be that they were just raised as a child without being forced to wear one and is simply used to being without it.

Ha! Reminds me when I was younger living in Qatar (Next to Saudi Arabia - Now live back in britain). My dad was driving me to school one day and got pulled over by the police. He thought they were giving him a speeding ticket or something and instead thanked him for being in his, and having me, in seatbelts (because so few Qatries do) and gave him a free watch! Lol awesome times.

Maybe it's a British thing! Either way - I prefer to be safe. ************. (Had to end it on such a note not to sound SO pansy-ish)

Yea but if you hit another person and your body goes flying into their car and you die it could really mess them up mentally.

I feel uncomfortable when I'm not wearing a seatbelt in a car. I feel...vulnerable. One of my cousins recently ended up in a few casts because she and her friends had been drinking and were all riding in her truck without seatbelts, when her fiance (who had also been drinking) wrapped the truck around a tree. Somehow, nobody died. I'm pretty sure it was a wake up call for her, anyway. She and her fiance were very close to leaving their almost three-year-old son without a mom or dad.

You couldn't pay me to ride a significant distance without a seatbelt. And I make sure everyone in my car is wearing theirs if I'm driving them, too. Because the last thing I want to do is put flowers on a friend's grave because they flew through my windshield. A lot of people here in Missouri regard seatbelts quite casually, and a lot of those friends probably wouldn't do it if I didn't tell them to.
