I know there was a time travel thread yesterday, but I was asked this by a friend earlier, and thought I would share.

Imagine, a scientist aks you to take part in an experiment. You can bring one large bag, with anything you want in it. He says that you will be sent through time but the machine can't be set and will send you randomly through time, it could be 40 years or 1000 years either way, the only guarantee is that you will end up in some sort of civilisation, it could be a small tribal village in the future or large city in the past. There is also no way of getting back.
With all this in mind, would you choose to go forwards or backwards?

Personally I would go backwards. I think that with a vague enough knowledge of history you could find somewhere safe/interesting to live, whereas you would have no idea what to expect in the future. I would also take some technology along with me, and could set myself up with scientists to reapply the technology and possibly become an inventor of some sort. My IQ would also most likely be higher than most people in the past so it would be fairly easy to adjust and move up.

Most of my friends said forwards so I was wondering what other people thought. Would you go to the past or the future, and why?

I wouldn't go at all, imagine having technology like we have in modern times and being able to apply it from say, the dark ages, if that works, we could be either extremely advanced, or dead from constant warring, in any case, I'd probably not go for fear of fucking things up.

Forwards,

that way I don't end up create some time paradox and end up making it so I never exist.

Not go at all. Mainly because if time is circular, forward and backwards are the same.
If it's linear, you can't change it without a self-annhilating paradox.
If it's multi-dimensional, you are travelling sideways as well as forward or backwards.

I wouldn't go. The temptation to alter the past would be too great and if I went forward the few people I do love would be dead. I'd stay right where I am...

Forwards. It'd be more of a learning experience. Plus, going backwards would leave me in a position where I don't know how to do anything because I'm so used to the modern world and modern conveniences. At least if I go forwards I'd probably just find there are even more conveniences. And hey, if there's been a nuclear war and everyone's fighting for survival, at least my bag of stuff will come in handy, as opposed to possibly getting me burned as a witch in the past.

Time machines are bad.

They create time paradoxes.
Or as they're more commonly known on Doctor Who, plot-holes.

OT: Forwards a few year to purchase a sexy gaming rig, then backwards a bit to the release day of Mafia 2.

Then masturbation 'til the end of days.

Backwaforwards?

Probably forwards to prevent a time paradox from occurring. Either way the potential of some sort of devastation is almost guaranteed.

Up or down through time. If you want to travel through time and actually be able to do something useful you have to travel through the 6th dimension, not the 4th or 5th. I'd say up, I want to see the future.
