I'm not saying that I out and out dislike Animal Collective, but I just don't understand their widespread appeal.

I more see them as a "niche band" that would be well known in the psychadelic sub-genre. But I don't understand how they are pretty damn popular, despite their unconventional songs.

So, for those of you who like the band, what do you like about them?

Or, is anyone, like me, scratching their head?

Whilst I do think they are over rated, I do really enjoy some of their stuff. I have to be in the mood for it though, otherwise it annoys me.

It's alright I guess.

I'm not a huge music fan, so it's pretty clear cut what I like and what I don't like so I'm not the most reliable source for music opinions however.

Never heard about them. I came in here expecting a topic about some new Animal Rights group.

I saw them at Meredith music festival last year in November.

Now I was on some mind altering substances and by some I mean too many but I can say that it was defs one of the most impressive live acts I've ever seen.

They are one of those bands that remix their own shit live so even if you haven't heard their music before or don't know many of their songs it doesn't matter. They do new stuff every show.

OOOH I love animals! I'll check out this band right now. Hell, I'll even log you my thoughts.

A report card by I. I'll grant them 100. However, I will lower this mark accordingly and fairly.
- Foxes notepad -

The first song I check is 'My Girls' I'm sorry. I don't like this song. Some reason, I really hate it. Hence Animal Collectives report Card is down to 75%.

Summer Clothes Odd. This song literally hurts my ears as well. I mean, there voice isn't horrible but some reason it hurts my ears. Sorry, minus another 25%. They're now down to 50% on my list.

Now I'm checking In The Flowers. I like the song name so I really hope it's a good song.
I like the starting, actually. I notice that their music is kind've dreamyish. Reminds me somewhat of Pink Floyd. I don't know whether to like this song or hate it. - 5% There report card is now down to 45%.

Now I'm checking out 'For Reverend Green.'

I disdain the starting with a passion. In fact, I'm sorry. I hate this song. Sorry, -25% and they're down to 20%.

Final song. For this one I'll be checking up Wikipedia on their singles and I'll pick one of those. Fireworks. Lets check that song out. I like the beat but as usual I some reason disdain the vocals, though they were nothing like the earlier songs I heard. I'm sorry, but I hate this songs vocals the most. -10%

My Final Verdict - 10%. It's just not my taste in music.

Was no one else expecting a tale about some sort of amalgam of random fauna that had created a sort of hive-mind?

Just me? Odd.

Same. 'Hmm, Animal Collective, what's that? Probably some guy trolling about how he hates animals and thinking they don't deserve compassion and caring. Hmm, I'm going to counter-troll him, I have spent the past 2 minutes working out the perfect scenario, I'm working out the perfect flame bait. Typing it in and ------- oh wait it's about a band :p'

I absolutely haaaaaaaaaaaaaaated their latest album. Too much synth, not enough good. Loved Strawberry Jam though, but I seriously don't see how this band is as big as it is. Must be hip college kids trying to impress their friends.

I guess I see them as a kaos/nord-twiddling version of My Bloody Valentine. I get it, but I don't actually like it, I think MBV did similar music a lot better 20 years ago.

Never heard of them. Give me a moment..

*Heads off in the direction of Youtube*

*Time passes*

*Rapid pattering of feet*

*Hare returns looking bedraggled, wild eyed and more insane than usual*

The hell was that?! Is it still after me? The voices! The VOICES! Make it stop, oh God, please make it stop..

Wasn't really aware that they were that popular.

Maybe they are a bit like Pavement in the nineties in that they are one of the most well known bands that nobody has ever heard of. A sort of quality introduction to more playful experimental and abstract music that doesn't play so much on rock 'n' roll clichés. Or maybe they are more like the Flaming Lips. Their music isn't boring to listen to anyway.

I enjoy the dynamics and rhythm, but a large part of the appeal for me and perhaps others are the lyrics. Their lyrics often deal with everyday life and domestic themes which I find very relatable at this point in my life. I would definitely look more to Strawberry Jam than Merriweather Post Pavilion.
