ok, so I thought that i might as well do a series of anime related question polls, starting with this: do you like to watch anime in japanese (original language) with subtitles, or dubbed over in english with American voice actors? Why?

For me, I prefer dubbed if possible just because I can understand the tone better and their emotions if the voice acting is done right, with proper pauses, exclamations, etc. When I watch with subtitles, its hard to get the full understanding. Not to mention I am a slow reader at times. However, if I understood japanese to a great extent, i would probably watch subbed.

EDIT: ok, so something went wrong and there is now two threads of this, one with a poll and one without. sorry, dont know how. if you really want, here is the line for the one with the poll...mods, sorry for the double post

Usually subbed, but sometimes the dubbed versions are actually good, something I've found out with FMA. I watched it both subbed and dubbed.

Where's the poll?

But I usually answer subbed on this question. Kind of depends though on how humorous the dubbing ends up.

Subbed, I don't know what it is, but I have NEVER EVER heard an anime with good English voice acting. I also am learning Japanese, so hearing it in its original language is good listening practice.

The only time I will watched subbed is if I am unable to watch it dubbed (excluding *shudders* fan dubs)

I love Katekyo Hitman Reborn, I think the Japanese voice actors did a good job for each character, I have nothing against them.

But if Funimation ever gets around to dubbing it and releasing it on DVD, I'll probably never watch the Japanese version again.

It depends on the anime and the dubbing job. If it's a good dub with good acting and non-grating voices, then I'm more likely to take the dub. If it's not available in English, then of course I'll watch the sub. If the dub is gosh awful (and I've noticed more and more are getting that way...in my opinion), then I'll take the sub. I don't mind subtitles really.

For example, I love the FMA dub. I think they chose good voices for most characters and none of the voices are really deal breakers for me. Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) on the other hand, I can't stand the dub. The voices are all wrong and the big deal breaker was the mansion staff.

I commend them on wanting to make most of the characters sound like they are from Britian (as they are), and I understand the staff characters are comic relief, but really? All of them being given gosh awful cockney accents? Come now! Shame on you all!

I usually like to watch them subbed. I'm not impressed with the English voice acting for a lot of the series that I've watched. Also I read quite fast, so that helps.

The exception is Outlaw Star. Listening to all those Western names pronounced in Japanese was enough to break the immersion for me. Definitely like the dub more.

9 times out of 10, I watch subbed. Actually, I always watch subs regardless, but will watch dubs if it's good, or I'm outvoted (damn slow reading friends).

Before the weeaboos come into this thread and begin to rant about how impure dubs are and how they're all learning Japanese and whatever, I only watch dubs, unless there isn't one around. I have no idea how you can determine if the Japanese actors are good or not if you don't even speak the language.

Subbed most of the time, dubbed for the Dragonball series because I grew up with them dubbed.
