I'm just about to finish watching Serial Experiments Lain. What do I get next?

It's a toss up between Gurren Lagann and Gintama. I need something shonen-y to cheer me up after Lain. It was good but FUCKED!!

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

In a sea of mediocre, archetypal, high pitched shite, GitS is a beacon of salvation.

Ghost in the Shell. Or, if you want to be so confused and haven't already, watch Evangelion (shame on you if you haven't) and get raped by the insanity of watching Lain and Eva without anything in between.

Or Hellsing. It may not seem to be cheery, but it'll have that effect.

Double quoted for double the truth.

GiTS is a paragon of awesome and intellect.

Oh, and for anyone interested, adultswim.com has the two most recently played episodes stored for a week. Right now they have Not Equal, the best stand alone episode, up.

Serial Experiments Lain has a fairly happy ending, I'm not sure you'll need to be cheered up.

But of those two, I guess you could watch TTGL.

I have to agree with this suggestion, even if it's not what the OP is asking for.

Man you watched all of Lain?

I got to the last 3 episodes and just stopped watching. Which is really weird, cause I usually love that stuff. The concepts and art styles were interesting, but it was a terribly structured and written anime (imo, of course), and it remains of the few dark animes I've never completed, along with Gantz (worst anime ever, should have waited for the manga to have been completed further) and Madlax (just all round bad and boring).

As for your two choices.... huh. I've never heard of those, so I can't suggest either lol. I may have to go look them up myself :D

Ghost in the Shell never really held my attention beyond the opening credits.
Evangelion was too miserable to continue watching. I just despised ALL of the characters too much to care about the plot nor the philosophy. I found the villains in NARUTARU were easier to root for then Evangelion's "heros."

In my opinion
Anything+EVA=AWESOME (Digimon Tamers, Rah Xephon, Narutaru)
EVA=CRAP

I chose those two because they, in my opinion, epitomize Shonen.
Gurren Lagann- If it's cool enough it doesn't have to make sense. TTGL does this better than Naruto, Bleach, Yu-Gi-Oh, DBZ, Souleater, Pokemon, FairyTail, etc. ever could.

Gintama- Takes popular shonen franchises BY NAME and parodies the f*ck out of them. It's like Ouran without the yaoi.
