You like what you like. Personally... I'm not fond of either Code Geas or Death Note, myself, and I've seen...a lot more than that list, myself. I just can't stand the lead character of either. At all. But personal preferences are just that... does that make them terrible anime? No. Just means they aren't something I personally enjoy. Considering your list... I'm not sure you're likely to be the sort to watch Cardcaptor Sakura or various other Shoujou anime. Does that mean Shoujou is bad? No. It means you'd rather Shounen. I would suggest trying some of it out sometime, since...well, you'll never know if you don't try a bit, too.

As for those suggesting Hellsing? Listen to them, it's awesome.

On the one hand, you've watched a ton of mindless shounen stuff. On the other hand, you've not really got any as your top anime, bar gundam. So I guess that elevates you from peasant and puts you somewhere in the middle. There are some anime you are direly deficient in. Puella Magi/Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, steins;gate, Fate/Zero from last year for example. Also, since you've seen so many anime, go watch World God Only Knows. You've seen enough archetypes to get (most) of it and *should* find it hilarious.

And if there's even the tiniest chance you can, go 'play' the visual novel Fate/Stay Night, all 75-100 hours of it, THEN watch Fate/zero. And not watch the anime Fate/Stay Night, because that's a travesty against the visual novel.

Tl;dr: Not a peasant, but could use some more story based anime rather than Shounen. Nothing wrong with shounen, just not material you can call a masterpiece. And as a story whore, I avoid it.

Oh, and if you're put off by the magical girl part of mahou shoujo madoka magica, here, have the only video I've found of the damn thing that doesn't have that spoiler in it, the aesthetics and musical score alone are worth the watch:

I once tried to make an anime list, but gave up around the 200 mark. In my experiance watching more anime will make you dislike anime you once thought were great, or not like them as much. I have yet to meet a person who went the other way unless they dropped the series.

I've watched several times more anime than you have if that's all you've watched and I still think Death Note and Code Geas (Geauss? dunno how to spell it) are crap.
Both shows bored the hell out of me and I had to quit watching them. And I have watched both versions of Hellsing.

I don't think you're an anime "peasant" you just have different tastes. I'm sure those shows have some kind of merit, otherwise nobody would like them. I just think that anyone that thinks less of someone because they don't like a particular anime needs to chill the hell out and quit thinking that everyone has to like their favorite shows.

So I was having an argument with someone earlier today about anime. It was over Death Note and Code Geauss - I don't really like either of them and don't think they're terribly good anime. The person I was talking to damn near exploded, and thinks I'm some sort of anime peasant, and that I simply haven't seen enough good anime to be a judge of it. I think he is full of shit.

But lets let the Internet decide, shall we? I to MyAnimeList.net and made as complete a list of the anime I've read/watched that I can remember off the top of my head. And now we'll let the Internet decide.

Am I an anime peasant as he claims? Anime noble? Or perhaps Lord of all Anime?

You are correct about Death Note and Code Geauss - they're not nearly as good as everyone seems to think. I mean, they aren't bad. I enjoyed the first half of Death Note before it got boring. Once the Zanatos Gambit was completed, the show lost a lot of interest for me. Also, for Code Geaus, I prefer the Abridged series. :p

However... you are still, at most, Merchant class.

You might qualify for minor nobility once you watch the other 154 episodes of Sailor Moon (I own all 200), Revolutionary Girl Utena, Slayers (all five seasons), Noir, El-Hazard (the original OAVs, not Wanders, which is okay but not as good as the OAV), at least the first two seasons of Ranma 1/2 (first three if possible), Bubblegum Crisis (the original OAV, not the remake entitled BGC 2040), and enough episodes of Star Blazers that you get the jokes in Excel Saga... which you also need to watch.

Once you've done that, come back and I'll set you up with some more obscure stuff.

Let's just say you have very different tastes from me. Comparing some things you finished (especially 200+ episode series) with some things you dropped leaves me with little common ground aside from some brilliant series in there that I've never even seen anime haters dislike.
I consider Death Note to be great followed by passable (really screwed the pooch on season 2, though I think the main character developed well throughout), while Code Geass was decent all the way through with occasional moments of greatness.

Doesn't mean either of us are wrong or right, though... we just don't have much common ground.

While I disagree with your view on Code Geass, an anime I fell in love with for some reason, your list has less than mine, but then again I'll watch anything (except Gundam) and it certainly doesnt make you a "peasant".

Seriously, I know most people have one particular "genre" of anime that the watch, but mine tends to be schizophrenic. One week I'll watch Fate/Zero (fantasy), then Higurashi (murder, horror), next its Nyan-koi (comedy), then Darker Than Black(dark, edgy, supernatural), then Nichijou (FUCKING WEIRD!).

As long as I'm entertained, I dont care.

I never said it wasn't overrated, it is still great as you said, hence the recommendation. Really it was just a convoluted way of trying to get another person to read the visual Novel. I think it's overshadowed by said visual novel, though at least this time it didn't turn out like the anime adaptation. You do not pronounce Excalibur like that guys...

Despite its flaws, its still one of my favourite anime. I'm pretty much bouncing to see what happens to Kariya in april. And caster and his master's reasons for killing are "So cool!" But I'd watch just to keep seeing Saber in a suit, so I'm not the best objective judge...

Death Note was basically perfect at the beginning, and then it just fell apart half way through and never recovered. A shame really, swap the position Near and Mello were in and it could it second winded...

Edit: Sorry for totally fangirling out on you, I do that sometimes.

So you're not allowed an opinion because you haven't seen enough of a particular genre? Erm... no that's not how it works. Unless it's doing something specific with the genre in order to make a point like Watchmen. Then you need to have a reasonably good idea what the traditions are but for Code Geass and Death Note I don't see why you'd need to be an anime expert to "get" them.

Depends on which season he was talking about. Code Geass R1 was pretty solid, but not terribly groundbreaking. R2 was horrifically bad.
Bad? BAD? Did you even SEE the ending? I'm sorry, but it is hands down the greatest ending in the history of storytelling. It was the perfect culmination of both Lelouche's and Susaku's character development. After all their work and hardship, they both make one of the most difficult choices anyone could ever make. Choosing the good of the people over the self. That kind of selflessness doesn't just come from nowhere, it makes perfect sense.

You want to know another reason Code Geass is better than 80% of the other anime out there? Pacing. I watch something like Bleach and you know how LONG it takes for anything to happen? Weeks, months even. It's not as bad as DBZ was, but sometimes it gets awfully close. And even then, when something does happen it takes several MORE episodes for it to actually happen.

And you know what Code Geass is about? People. Not fighting styles or who has the biggest sword or the flashiest power, it's about people. People and their desires and their fears and their regrets. Real breathing people who do things for their own reasons, not because a plot dictates they do. They MAKE the plot.

I'm sorry, I get a little nuts when it comes to CG, but maybe you should take a class that teaches you proper story structure someday, it might help you understand more.

Yeah, that list is really mainstream. You got Bakemonogatari on hold? Wha-? Where's Tatami Galaxy? Panty and Stocking w/Garterbelt? Steins Gate? Madoka Magica? Not even Darker than Black? School Days? Clannad? Geez, its just..

Code Geass was "Okay" to me, but, there are plenty of other shows, older even, that had better execution. I'm not saying it's poor.

Oh, well maybe you don't look into things like that. Everyone doesn't give as much effort to find something different than what's thrown at us; You shouldn't have to. Please understand, that I'm not trying to be negative in any way here. I apologize if I am. Digging a little deeper won't hurt.

Well I do think you should see more anime as there is a lot of good ones out there, but I don't think you're "wrong" in your opinion of DN and CG. I loved both of them when I first saw them, but my opinion drops upon reflection and as I see more anime. While I still consider DN great overall, I acknowledge the flaws and can understand if someone wouldn't like it.

But like I said, if you ever wanna be "Lord of all Anime" you should definitely beef up your list. If you want, you can check out my list [http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Osaka117&status=7&order=0] just as long as you don't take the ratings too seriously as I don't really like using a number rating system to rate anything. That said, I can recommend anything I gave a 8 or higher to anyone.

As far as I can tell from this list, you are perhaps one of the most exclusively shonen anime watchers I've ever seen. Namely, action anime. [Not that I've ever gone through someone's anime list before.]

If that's the majority of your taste, I can see why a more dramatic anime like Death Note doesn't tickle your fancy quite like it does to others.

I'm no expert, but the anime you've seen certainly cries mainstream, as others have said. More than anything, though, it just sounds like you and your friend have differing definitions of "good anime."

Recommendations to beef up your list a little

Higurashi
Mirai Nikki
Deadman Wonderland (neat despite how gutted it was)
Welcome to the N.H.K.
Serial Experiments Lain

I also thought 11 Eyes was pretty cool despite how short it was.

I'm currently watching Phi-Brain, Un-Go, Steins;Gate, and Naoki Urasawa's "Monster" so I can't really comment on them.
