Can I steal your car? I can't afford to buy one.

As for me, I have no choice. I can't find any good animes in any of my stores (in a 300k+ city), only some unknown crap I have never heard about, the only station airing good anime is unavailable in my city (I have no idea why - works on satelite, but I can't hog the TV just for anime, and at 9pm) and from manga, I could only find GTO... Which I've already watched twice on the aforementioned station.

I also wanted to buy Samurai Jack collection, but the only option would be to ship it from the damn USA...

I pirate most of my anime because unless its ghost in the shell the UK doesn't seem to have any clue to what anime is which is a shame considering we use PAL like the japs do

I don't watch anime as much as I read manga, but thanks to Netflix, I can usually rent and set myself up for a purchase if need be.

With less income, do you think that the creators of One Piece or any other manga artist and writers (usually only being 1-3 people on a single series) could continue making the things you love?
Are we talking about anime or manga? Two pretty different things, there.

Either way, I find it odd that you bring up Eichiro Oda. Do you realize how unbelievably huge One Piece is? Regardless of moral considerations, I find it extremely doubtful that the man is in any danger whatsoever of less income, especially since that anime you're talking about is an extremely popular anime adaptation of an extremely popular manga.

I view my anime accidently. If I am flipping through the channels looking for something to watch, I might land on an anime program, at which point, I quickly change the channel, and rinse my eyes out with bleach.

I don't rent things, I've done all of the others.

I prefer to either buy DVDs or stream things from a legal source, but where I can do neither I'll watch a jimlad stream or torrent it.

The only reasonable way to get me to stop pirating is to offer up anime/manga for "free" by paying for it with advertising. I'm excited to see animes (actually just all sorts of shows) getting released via Hulu and Youtube for "free" (not really free since there's advertising but it's free enough for me)
Isn't this basically what Crunchyroll does? But you still pirate. Plus, you (and a few others like you) keep acting like it's okay to pirate stuff because you can't afford it, but it's not like you're being denied a basic right; it's entertainment, not chemotherapy. I can't afford a new Lotus, much as I'd love to have one, but that doesn't give me the right to steal one; I just do without. (And before anyone tries to give me a bunch of shit, I realize that a new car =/= DVDs. The principle is still the same.)

If you don't want to ride the topic train, don't jump on.

See, here's the thing. It's lovely to support the creators when I can, but it's not always possible to get my hands on a series in my region on DVD, so streaming is pretty much the only option. And even when I can, I either have to shell out a shitload of money for like eight discs to get the whole series, or I have to buy a box set with all the extra stuff (like cultural notes and concept art and stuff) stripped out. I realize the industry is out to earn a living like anyone else, but cripes, that seems excessive, doesn't it? Plus, I wanted to buy Hayate No Gotoku on DVD, but when I saw that it only had subs, not dubs, what was the point? I've already seen the subbed version. (I'm the kind of deviant who likes watching both; usually I watch the dub and then the sub.)

That being said, though, I don't pirate anything, including anime, unless you count streaming. Even then I don't do it if it's available in my area; I've been known to stop watching a show mid-series and buy it on disc when it became available after I'd already started watching.

Racial slurs, very nice. Always a good way to get attention.

EDIT: I borrowed all of my manga. I could never justify dropping ten dollars on something that took me fifteen minutes to read.
You can read a whole volume of manga in fifteen minutes? Plus, compared to American comics, you get more pages for less money if you work out the math. (American comics = about 30-35 pages for around $5 per issue; manga = over 200 pages for about $10 per issue. Cheaper in the long run.)
saying jap about as rascist as sayin yanks. sure it was used in ww2 but doesnt change the fact its a simple abbreviation of JAPanese. It's like when you call people from czechoslovakia 'czechs'.

On-topic: I download .mkv and .avi files from teh torrents and direct dowbload. I dont buy localized dvd's as thats supporting those awful dubbers, though Bebop and fullmetal were done well. If anything I'd probably import the original dvd and then download the .mkv's if im feeling generous.

*THE ABOVE STATEMENT IS PURELY HYPOTHETICAL AND IN NO WAY REPRESENTS ACTUAL EVENTS.

I'd love to be able to buy Anime, I have about 5 Boxsets of stuff I got cheap, but the prices in the UK are just insane, £25 for 4 episodes of Trinity Blood? Crazy stuff...

I don't watch enough anime to purchase it, sometimes a friend tells me about an interesting show and I download a couple of episodes to check it out, but it usually stays with that, I'm not that much into anime. The only anime I really loved, Cowboy Bebop, I initially watched on TV and I've been wanting to buy it on DVD for a while now. Sadly it's barely affordable, but I'll keep looking.

Um, dude, every anime DVD I've ever seen has both the original Japanese and the dub, if it even includes the dub at all (like Hayate No Gotoku). That's not a good argument; it's like saying you don't want to buy a DVD because you have a problem with the guy running the shrink-wrap machine.

Wait, so I should feel guilty because the licensing companies in the UK charge me £16-£20 ($26) for four (sometimes three) episodes? Uh, no. One company - the guys who were selling Ouran High School Host Club, were selling their DVDs of 13 episodes for £16, right next to dozens with far worse deals. Guess who got my sale?

I will not be gouged and propagate a cycle where they think they can charge ridiculous amounts for extremely small amounts of content. Especially when you consider that these prices included things such as Bleach and Naruto - series which have hundreds upon hundreds of episodes.

I buy plenty of manga though, when the shops actually bother stocking it anyway.

If i want to support hayate no gotoku!, I'll give my money to the original team, not the liscensing company. hence my buying of imported dvd's. They get a sale, I get a dvd, liscensers and dubbers dont get my money, eveyone's happy.

I don't stream all the time, only when I'm too impatient to wait for the next dvd release. Generally I only stream what I'm already purchasing.

what if you live somewhere backwards with only a couple stores and none carry what you like? Thats my Dilemma lol.
eBay that sucker!
Do you realise how expensive shipping costs can be for some countries? Youll have to really buy a huge bulk just to justify the purchase and i reckon most ppl would need alot of time to collect the cash anyway. I personaly get my anime for free mostly cuz there were no dvds in my country also cuz before i couldnt afford it. After i came to australia my finance actualy allows me to buy stuff but im not watching anything at the moment. I think only thing i would bother downloading is One Piece cuz its my favorite.
I just prefer manga before anime. Animes usualy cut stuff and change some stories which always makes me angry.
And its very relaxing to sit back in the sofa and have some quality time with a book (even if its a manga).
but ye you cant always blame people for downloading for free. Most people cant afford or if they do buy some stuff they simply cannot meet all their needs. What if you watch like 50 on-going animes. . . cmon thats some serious buck even for the high australian standards!!
i know hardcore anime fans who have TBs of anime on their PCs . . . .i cant even imagine how much money would all that cost if they actualy had to pay for it.

To sum it all in my experiance everybody who can affod it and is a fan of some kind of a franchise will go and buy it cuz its more enjoyable.
And if some nations live in an 500$ average monthly salary pray tell how will they aford to buy couple of their favourite anime seasons on dvds and keep in mind that the prices are the same!

I'm fairly sure, that a decent chunk of the Escapist community are watchers of Anime, and I'm sure most people are always wanting a new show to watch, or just something new to see to please the mind and eyes. But most people just go around, without a care, and stream entire seasons of shows, being unaware of the consequences. Just as with music, if you are getting this stuff for free, you are taking away from the creators and distributors of the product. With less income, do you think that the creators of One Piece or any other manga artist and writers (usually only being 1-3 people on a single series) could continue making the things you love?

For a more detailed explanation of what I'm trying to say, I advise you to take a peek at this video: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/marzgurl/reviews/12669-animeed01

I personally used stream all the time, but now if I see something that looks appealing to me, I'll just go out and buy the box set if I can.

So I just want to know, how exactly do you acquire your anime? and would you change it if it meant getting more of what you love?
I would love to actually buy all the music and Animé that I like. The problem is there's a TON of Japanese rock / pop that I listen to and living in the UK it's pretty impossible to find a store that even stocks a learn Japanese CD, let alone music. Online it'll cost me an arm and a leg to get a single CD shipped from Japan, not to mention I have to go through Japanese websites (which I won't be able to read or understand) So, unfortunately, I have to download them.

With Anime, again, living in the UK it is hugely expensive, DVD's selling for £20-30 and box sets going for anywhere up to £80. If they were cheaper, maybe I would buy more. This is why i'm stuck on episode 42 of Bleach, I dont want to stream it because I want it playing on my HD TV.

I watch fan-subs. Why? because I am not going to wait forever for useless companies to hire useless(usually) voice actors who ruin characters. Also, they show it on T.V for free(ish) to us anyways.

OK I have to admit that I pirate anime AND manga but I do also buy them (no, i'm not using that as a defence).
Prices in the UK can be extremly ridiculous but have you people never heard of CEX? I get most of my films/games/music from there. Yeah OK so it's second hand and can be in a bit of a dodgy condition but so what? It's still legit and it's cheap. No excuse.
Look in charity shops and second hand shops yopu'dbe surprised what you'd find....
