Drat, I can't remember the rest of it, but it was some well-written OP that kinda captured my sentiment on this topic. Let me dig it up...

Generally, I'm less than fond of the typical elements that constitute anime; Unless I'm bored, I won't default to watching anime just 'cause its anime. I don't let this be a bias when I'm watching more unusual series/OVAs, though- I enjoyed Serial Experiment Lain, .hack//SIGN. I do also have a soft spot for some of the classics of the generic categories, like Tenchi.
I don't hesitate to point out that there's a lot of rubbish anime out there, but I don't go around insulting things like Full Metal Alchemist just because it doesn't appeal to me. If its a quality product, then I'll give it some respect.
