Can I just jump on the "who do you save" bandwagon?

No one is drowning and there are no whirlpools, but for reasons that are unlikely to become clear, you and two other strangers are trapped in 3 rooms with limited air supplies. Rescue is one hour away, your air supply will last 70 minutes. The air supply in each of the other rooms will only last 30 minutes.

There is a button in your room, if you press it your air supply will immediately be divided up between the other 2 people. You will now die but they will live to be rescued. If you do nothing, you will live and they will die.

Will you press the button and give up your life to save the lives of 2 complete strangers. Will you do nothing and survive at their expense.

If you're worried about prosecution, don't be. Under UK law you can't be prosecuted for failing to save someone.

I'm human and probably, sadly, not that selfless.
I really can't honestly say how I'd act under that kind of pressure.
I might just take too long to decide and end up living because of my indecisiveness.

[sub][sub]In other words, no I'd probably save myself[/sub][/sub]

No. The only people I'd ever even remotely feel obliged to risk my life for, would be those I am very, very close to. Not completely unknowns, sorry.

I wouldn't press the button, and if I was in the dieing position I wouldn't hate the guy for doing the same. If you think saving yourself goes against morals, then I'd save sacrificing yourself goes against evolution.

No, I don't agree with suicide, at least not for myself when I have everything to live for.

Besides, it would be a lot easier for the 2 other people to regulate their breathing and make their 30 minutes of air last twice as long, than it would for me to breath without any air whatsoever.

If they don't have the survival instincts or awareness to make their limited air supply last for as long as possible, then it makes absolutely no sense for me to kill myself to make up for their shortcomings.

No... nope, I'm not pressing the button.

Why? Simple, really. I am fucking afraid to die.

I figure out of all these arguments, someone should just spit out this plainly. I am scared to go to the other side. I wanna avoid going there as long as possible. So no, I'm not going to be all self sacrificing for people.

Hell, I'm not even sure I could do it for someone I know. Damn if I'll do it for a stranger.

I'd save myself and then dedicate my life to hunting down the person who trapped me in that scenario. In the movie version I want Nathan Fillion to play me, Alison Sudol to play the love interest and Morgan Freeman to do voice overs.

If the other rooms contain family members then i'd sure as hell press the button. Completely random strangers though? Yeah sorry, i'm going to live.

No, I wouldn't press the button / I would save myself (have your poll and topic questions be the same please)

I wouldn't even say sacrificing yourself would be objectively the morala very silly phrase for me to say thing to do, because it's not a math problem. I would still feel bad, but it's not like people are so great about long-term thinking.

Now, if I had a kid, who was sick and one of the strangers was leading the research into a cure for the very specific and totally life-threatening illness my kid had, then we'd have a dilemma.

Sidenote: I'd be a little... unnerved if self-sacrifice was required by law...

Yeah, I think I'd press the button. I don't see why I should be afraid of death as I don't believe in an afterlife. So if me sacrificing myself saves those two people, who perhaps don't share such a philosophy, why not?

Fuck that; I don't know what the damn button does but I do know it was built by someone attempting to murder 3 people, so I'm sure as hell not touching it.

You know...

Pressing that button would supposedly create a pure vacuum. Causing your cell to implode whilst your body, assuming you have some air in it, explodes. All the while you're saving two people.

Can you imagine any death cooler than exploding in the middle of implosion to save two strangers?

Can you imagine the headlines?

Hell yeah I'd press that button!

If pressing the button includes a shotgun blast to the head, I'll do it. I don't care about dying, as long as it's quick and painless. Why would I? I'm not going to live to regret it. Suffocating though? No way. No. No!

Sure I'd hit that button. I'm not entirely certain why I'm still alive in the first place and I'm certainly not afraid of death. Although suffocation wouldn't be my fist choice of ways to go though.

Capacha: "good for nothing"
How strangely appropriate.

I would find the one that placed those buttons and kick his evil ass! Butt-kicking, for goodness! Right, Boo?

Seriously though. Have you played Baldur's Gate 2 recently? You get practically identical question at the beginning. Though you know that other captives are your sibling and that your dad is the (now former) God of Death, so...
(but sacrificing yourself gets you a better reward :p)

To answer the question... I think I would push the button and I'm gonna let you think it's from the goodness of my hearth and love for my kin.

My response depends on something. You say that we're in 3 separate rooms, are there windows into these rooms to see each other?

If there are: I'd pick myself...watching someone suffocate would be pretty gruesome and I'd likely feel so horrible about doing it and watching the consequences that I wouldn't be able to live with myself after that.

If there are not: I'd pick the others. Essentially it's the same as a soldier on a battleship pushing a button to launch a missile which will quickly ruin the day of a number of people miles away.

The difference being that it's a lot easier to push a button and have x people you've never seen die rather than killing someone face-to-face.
