Not a single mention.

Ratchet & Clank

Jak & Daxter I & II
I've always thought of them as platformers before third person shooters. But now you mention them, they ARE awesome.
They're also Playstation only, so not applicable to this!

I was thinking of mentioning it but it's a bit weird for me 'cause it's third person until you encounter a shitload of enemies you need to shoot. I loved that game, made me feel like I was in charge, a feeling I lost a bit along the road to next-gen gaming.

Second on Freedom Fighters.

Although thinking laterally for a minute.

I'm sure you could pick up a PS1, Syphon Filter, SF2 and 3 for not much more than one new pc game. The first two are fantastic (although sadly aged now), whilst number three is simply quite good. Then the PS2 versions came along and the wheels fell of the franchise.

The last two levels of SF1 and most of SF2 are some of the hardest in gaming ever...
You ought to try the PSP ones, Dark Mirror in particular. It grabs you by the balls and refuses to let go.

Mercenaries is cool, so is Warhawk, although that's online and PS3 only.

Old one. American McGee's Alice. Imagine jumping through a giant clock while engaging in a dogfight with flying banshees.

Ooooh the max payne games! try them out, they're awesome! (3d realms worked on them ;P).

as for the question in the poll, there should always be more games on any genre except fps's, because an entire year of ppl making this kind of games is enough. In fact, no console should ever get an fps. The controls suck, i never have any precision ('cept maybe for metroid prime 3). On the other hand, third person shooters work pretty well on consoles.

By the way, i got the gamecube version of enter the matrix and i actually enjoyed the game. Nothing groundbreaking, just mindless fun and endless combos on agents (and there was hacking!).

*has the feeling this post just made him a stupid gamer in the eyes of the entire escapist community*

This really isn't an action game per say, but Resident Evil 4 has an over-the-shoulder camera, as well as shooting elements reminiscent of a Third Person Shooter.

Also, I've heard that Freedom Fighters is decent.

Evidently you've never played Goldeneye.

I have to disagree with you on the precision point, the technique is different but precision is still just as possible. Wait.. what? the aiming mechanics on most third person shooters are the same as fps's, apart ffrom the lock systems in some tps's, how is aiming easier?

When your mum thinks your galaxy is too untidy and sorts everything into random drawers. I mean, I could find Pilus 9 when it was in the Oction Sector, so why did she move it into the box under my bed?

i cant like a 3rd person game unless it has the over-the-shoulder cam, example: GOW or Army of Two (Even though I didn't like AO2) other camera modes only seem to work in horror games, such as silent hill. Wow, sorry this isn't actually relevant to your question, I'm just more of an FPS guy.

Well, i keep my point. I may agree you can be as precise with a controller as you can with a mouse, but, at least for me, i'm a lot faster with the mouse than with the joystick.

And not all TPS's have the same aiming mechanics as fps's. Check GTA san andreas. They use an auto lock-on on console versions.

Is this really a gamer's forum? How can you all forget...

Hitman

There's a reason why Third Person games don't tend to come out on the PC though, because using a mouse to move a camera normally sucks balls

I can see where you are coming from but console shooters of both types seem to suffer from lack of control adjustment which is important in shooting games of all kinds. It is kind of weird playing hitman on PC because it's more about stealth. It really depends on the game.

I thought Katamari Damacy answered that question appropriately...

(Hint: The answer is booze)

Freedom Fighters by IO interactive (the same who made hitman. That's a really good game. I reckon you can get it pretty cheap too
Ooh, I forgot about that game because my ex-wife stole it... I LOVED that game... Such good times...
Just bought it for the old xbox again, and i think I'll be playing through again soon. The squad controls are excellent, especially if you look at how simple they are. They are intuitive and work really well

Did Merceneries ever make it to PC? I believe the sequel is.

It's sorta GTA mixed with a 3rd person shooter.

Set in Korea, and you have the '52 most wanted' deck of cards, and you gather intel and capture or kill them by any means, gaining double rewards for alive captures.

I make it sound deeper than it was tho, its pretty much a comedy gunfest :D
