The only prequel I can remember I liked was the animated comics for Dead Space. They had terrific writing, fantastic art, an interesting plot and characters, and stellar voice acting. If the game had the story and writing these comics did, Dead Space would be one of my favorite games of all time. Heres the first:

Eh, either way. And it's always a win if their good, a la "Halo Reach". Yeah, I LIKED Reach. Say whatever you want about it, but it's proven to be Microsoft's best release so far.
you hold a good point. It's nice to see the war through the eyes of a Spartan besides master chief

Depends on how good the actual prequel is.

For instance, Clone Wars = Epic Fail.
I beg to differ. Anyway, I love Prequels and I'll watch them.

Assassins creed 2, of course. Better story than the first, better graphics, better music. And, as some has stated, Kingdom Hearts 2, DMC 3. I really enjoyed the whole Jak and Daxter series too.

As a rule, no, I hate them. They fuck up the established canon. However there have been a few that I have enjoyed despite that.

i am in the minority of people who actually like star wars episode 1. Also i have never understood the hate on jar jar.

Prequels can be good but sometimes the aren't.

It really doesn't bother me at all. A crappy prequel is just as bad as a crappy sequel, and as far as I'm concerned the crappy sequel happens far more often.

But then again, people always need something to complain about. It might as well be prequels.

Heh, DMC 3 is like the ultimate prequel. Though, I know other good ones.

Prequels face inherent difficulties because you always know how they're going to end. So it's hard to make a good prequel, such as Metal Gear Solid 3.

If it's good i like it if it's bad i don't. Hating prequels outright is just silly.

Star Wars prequels were crappity crap, but the prequel stuff in The Godfather Part 2 was AMAZING.

know what? I liked the Star Wars Prequels. were they perfect? no, but ey they were pretty good and added some depth to the srory. I think the idea of a prequel is kinda gimmicky in general (Star Wars already had lore of what had happened in the past, in general no one cares)
You're certainly free to like them, but you're being incredibly generous calling them "good". They garner the hate they do for very legitimate reasons.

Hmm...Metal Gear Solid 3, Devil May Cry 3, Baten Kaitos Origins...

Yes, I'm very much capable of loving prequels.

It really depends on the prequel.

I think a good example of a good prequel would be Dragon Warrior III - partly because it's not even apparent that it IS a prequel until about 3/4 of the way through the game.

It also helps that it takes place long before the games it's a prequel of; since the events of the game are only a dimly-recalled legend in the time of the Dragon Warriors I and II, they had lots of leeway in writing the story without having to worry about breaking continuity or violating fan expectations, and plenty of ways to surprise the player (in this case, with the biggest surprise being that it actually is a prequel). This also helped Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals and Castlevania 3, which were also excellent prequels (though to be fair, the early Castlevanias didn't have much of a storyline to begin with).

As others have said Prequels can be good.
Video game example: Devil May Cry 3
For a movie example, if you're so against prequels than what about the Batman Begins series ala Dark Knight. Hmm?

Also IMHO MGS3 was certaintly not as good as the original MGS. Story and gameplay were more unique to the first than the 3rd. But that is just my opinion. DMC3 hands-down is the ultimate prequel.

Although do you notice that both those titles follow a really bad sequel?

Generally with prequels and sequels I'll just watch them for the hell of it if I liked the series they are based on unless it starts getting REALLY difficult to watch (what the hell is going on with the Saw movies? do they write scripts or make it up on the same day of filming?).

Generally they are a crappy money making strategy, but you have to give them a chance because sometimes they aren't.

They are kind of a hit or miss thing. Generally when they hit, they are really good but when they miss, they miss hard.

Wait, I'm sorry. You're actually condemning an ENTIRE STORYTELLING technique as inherently useless?

You are trying to tell me that, for all intents and purposes, there is NO WAY that a prequel could EVER be any good, or even worth looking into, no matter what the context, writing, genre of rhetoric, etc....EVER. Seriously?

That's like saying that any "betrayal" plot-line will inherently be predictable. (Another theory posited by this site) Christ, you people just don't get storytelling, do you?

Some times they're good, most often they summer from the inherent problems associated with Prequelism.

The best kind of prequels are the ones that only influence/relate to the plot of the 'first' movie/film/book, and only deal with the characters in an indirect way.

A good example is Metal Gear Solid 3, in my eyes. It hardly deals with any characters featured directly in MGS1, the exception being Ocelot. Thing is, Kojima succeeded in making Ocelot less badass, but still somewhat believable. The game, also, doesn't screw up the mystique and mystery that surrounded the Snakeverse up to that point. Sadly, MGS4 did it with great force.

In any case, a problem with prequels is that it has to work in a framework already set. Also, the observant's imagination has already established/filled in the backstory. That's one of the reasons why the Star Wars prequels and Hannibal Rising were so 'shitty'.

On their own, they weren't that bad, but let's be honest here... In your imagination, Darth Vader was more of a true Shakespearean hero than a whiny ****, and the same goes (but less whiny, I guess) for young Hannibal.

Whatever the makers think of, and it doesn't help that their motivation is inspired by greed; because else they would have begun with the prequel, it sucks harder than what you yourself already thought of.

But, of course, there are always exceptions.

The problem with prequels is that you already know how they have to end. What was Lucas gonna do, put a surprise twist in there where he revealed that someone else was Vader? (actually, I wouldn't put that past Lucas).

Any suspense has to come from the action itself, which is all but impossible the same way a game loses its story punch the second time through.
