I'm an anime fan.
I love almost everything about it *Asides from most of the English dubbing actors.

Not to sound condescending to anyone who legitimately doesn't like anime but for the most part people who don't watch anime haven't given it a fair chance. They say things like "I'm not going to watch cartoons" that's like me claiming live action TV shows are all for kids because of Nickelodeon.

Anime is really just like any other type of show (It's not, but bare with me) there are good ones and there are bad ones. To me asking someone if they like Anime is asking them if they like music. The people who say "No" are really just asking for the "Well have you heard this song?" response. I do know a guy who used to not like anime until I tied him to a chair Clockwork Orange style and forced him to watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Within a week his Netflix queue was full of anime. It's not like he's in love with the genre now, he just respects that it has just as much merit to entertain and disappoint as any other medium.

I'm not really sure how you can judge anime as a whole. It's like saying that you don't like movies; it doesn't really make any sense because not all movies are the same. I don't like SOME movies, but I find others brilliant.
Anyways, I watch anime whenever I'm really bored. I don't usually watch anything popular here in America, not for the sake of being a hipster, it's just that, coincidentally, the ones that come to America are typically shitty, like DBZ, InuYasha, so on and so forth. I still enjoy watching shows like Black Lagoon, Hajime no Ippo, GunXSword, Eden of the East, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Spice and Wolf, Great Teacher Onizuka, etc.

I liked anime until just about high school when I ran into those types of people....

I loved DBZ and when the right people/company gets their hands on it they can make a damn good game

I still enjoy Pokemon (old) and the games (doesnt matter)

I watched faithfully all of G Gundam

Nowadays its just....for fucks sake....annoying....I dont care about your emo god damn backstory...write a book! Kill his ass! We get it Japan loves the Bad Guys Nuked Your Shit Take a Sword a Loli and an Emo-er Friend and Kill They Ass!

I also watched AKIRA once a while back....it was good by those badassery 80s animation standards

I used to love anime, but not really too much anymore.
Most recent thing I watched is Gurren Lagann, about 2 years ago?
I would still watch it if there was anything that interested me though.

I watch occasionally, but I'm not a huge fan. I assume I'll just keep going through the same phases of watching none to watching two series in a week for quite a while now.

Recommendations? Either Baccano or Trigun. And don't bother with that subbed crap: if you, by some amazing feat, actually see these, they really do have some of the best dubs out there.

And both are on Netflix, BTW.

I still like it but the spectrum is increasingly narrow.
DBZ, YuGiOh, PokeAmom... and all that shit I loved as a kid I can not take anymore, and most of the others I love the style and hate most characters and stories.

I'm so much an 'Ex-anime fan' as I am a 'depends on my mood fan'.

Well, I am an ex-Anime fan...in the sense that I no longer watch certain anime that appealed to me as a child.

I've more than made up for that by finding a lot of anime that appeal to me as an adult.
Said it better than I could have.

I can barely stand some of the anime I watched as I was younger.

People who watch Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece, and expect gold are going be disappointed. Those are the Survivor of the Anime world, engineered to be as safe and friendly as possible.

Watch something like Blood+, Code Geass, even Gundam 00 for more complex ideas.
Clannad should be in that list. Deathnote and Higurashi too.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Anime is a massive bastardisation of the human form in almost every sense. Some manga artist (particularly the hybrid artists) have produce some fantastic works but anime is almost all horrid cheating in both good art and animation (or lack of).

In its defense, it is not the only cheat out there and I despise them as much... *cough*Family Guy*cough*

I suppose you are wondering what I do enjoy? Well, Disney films, Tom & Jerry (particularly Hanna and Barbera stuff) and when in doubt, a bit of Pixar.

For me, anime is like books; impossible to dislike completely.
Anime is so complex, detailed and diverse, that it is as impossible to dislike, as it is impossible to dislike reading books.

I have seen anime that is serious, non-serious, philosophical, non-philosophical, political, non-political, emotional, non-emotional, and every other kind of category imaginable, that it is impossible to nail anime down as any kind of media.
For me, watching anime is like reading a book. It doesn't matter that I watch most anime subbed, what matters is the content of the anime, and the way it expresses it.
Like any media, there is some content that is non-sensical, and in anime, one example that I can mention, is DBZ. Every season is the same: all is well until an evil force is recognized. The force has a power level that is FUCKING CRAZY. Then the heroes train. Then the heroes fight the peons of the evil force/fight the evil force when the evil force is fucking around. Then someone dies or gets seriously hurt, and someone gets really pissed, and fights the evil force. The evil force gets hurt a bit, but is otherwise fine. Then that person is beaten to a pulp. Then the main character of that season fights the evil force, takes an entire episode to charge their lazer at some point, and finally defeats the evil force, but ONLY BY A TINY MARGIN.
That is why I don't like any DBZ season ever. Because the entire season is predictable.
Yes, I know that technically any season of anything ever, is predictable, but in DBZ, the same framework is used for every single episode ever.

I have laughed, loved, and learned from many anime.
I have watched some anime that made me consider my own government, my own philosophy, even my own existence.
The fact remains, that anime is a very good way to learn more about your world, or yourself, or nothing at all.
Anime is a media, and like any media ever there is something you can find within it, that you will like. Guaran-fucking-teed.

Ok I will give you the ultimate test to see if you will like anime again.

Watch Clannad, and Clannad: After Story, if you like it, good, if you love it, even better, if you even mention you dont like it or something like that, do not ever cross my path or my computer monitor again, also any other Clannad fan ever again...you wont like what happens.
