cause I'm getting really tired of them. They're too much of an overused villain, and I think we need to have villains that are intelligent, unique. I'm tired of these faceless masses on the nonliving. Not much else to say, just really bored of them. at least make them horrifying and keep them off the camera, like "silent hill style" monsters, but not like necromorphs as they seem to just jump out and get shot. dead space wasn't scary, as the fiends were shown off to much, and monsters are scarier when you don't see them, like in the original "The Thing".

anyone else tired of zombies, or at least got any thoughts on monsters in horror games?

I still like zombies, mainly because I've not played that many games with zombies in (L4D2, Killing Floor might count... Perhaps COD 5 may also count.) since many games that are being released as zombie games don't have zombies in, they involve crappy mutated things in that are trying to look horrific whilst also being stronger and faster than humans (The necromorphs in Dead Space and the things in Resident Evil 5 for example)

The way things are currently, I cannot think of another horrifying creature that can be used in place of zombies for those kinds of games... Werewolves are much to strong to be encountered and murdered en masse, Vampires could work but are shunned because of being ruined by Twilight, Mummies are essentially zombies along with ghouls, Ghosts have the whole incorporeality thing going providing issues with story showing how they are being killed.

So action-horror games will still need to use zombies as their enemies, but actual horror games need to be getting released with their unknown villains, of which there is a large pool of available creatures and critters that can be used. The fact that it could be possible to mix the two is something that hasn't been used much (I can only think of the example of Resident Evil 3, it wasn't scary as such but the camera angles and limited ammo made the masses of zombies you encounter cause tension and having the constant threat of Nemisis popping out at any point nagging at the back of your mind ramped it up)

Yeah, too many survival horror games have become action-horror, we need to have more games like Dark Corners of the Earth, Silent Hill, or Amnesia, ones where you can't fight back easily or at all, therefore giving more suspense and tension for immersion. It's not scary if you can gun down every monster like expendable mooks.

I was never particularly enthused by them in the first place, so... *meh*

However, a couple of my friends have noted the saturation level of zombies and hardly bat an eye when informed of an impending release of zombies.

I'm tired of variant zombies. I want the good ol' shuffle squad back. All we get now is ouroboros monsters, running zombies, things like in dead space. I miss the good old shambling horde made of 500 bajillion enemies.

Kinda. I like Left 4 Dead, but if it were just about shooting zombies, I think it would get boring pretty quickly. I would not enjoy the single player. Zombie games could still be fun if done more inventively, but the formula is just rather tired and generic at the moment. Aside from a few variations, on the mechanism of the zombie infection, on the appearance of zombies, and maybe their speed, it's just the same shit dressed in different skins. Developers could definitely be more creative with swarm enemies.

Er...if they are the ginormoriffic half man, half giant wolf thing, I guess. If they are much the same size as wolves, and don't retain human intelligence...well, wolves are endangered/extinct in lots of places humans live for some reason.

But, lots of monsters could be used instead of the zombie horde, you just miss that bit about having to off your friend who is one, and the sneaky guy hiding the fact he's bitten and will inevitably become a zombie.

Day of the Triffids (the first movie adaptation) had a zombie movie sorta feel and they were plant monsters.

...

But, normal zombies aren't really scary except under certain circumstances. No intelligence, slow, clumsy, no co-ordination, can't use tools, and nobody minds if you kill them.

Now, if some evil wizard brought them to life, was directing them, if they could have smart zombies and evil wizardry, that might work, yeah.

No not really, I just think that games are going in the wrong direction.

I think the industry needs to make a game based more on survival rather than fighting, which is why I think Dead Island lacked a bit. It was fun and a good game but there were no random events, just more set pieces.

This is why I'm looking forward to 'Fortnite' just because it's taking a survival/defense look at the zombie game genre.

No. Since I have a PS3, I haven't been able to play the Left 4 Dead games, and most other zombies games are rather shit. Dead Island is obviously pretty bad, but even Dead Rising makes itself really hard to enjoy, with some mindbogglingly stupid decisions. I've always hated Nazi zombies because it's horrible repetitive, the zombies aren't very fun to fight, and everyone takes it too seriously. RDR is the only game whose zombies I enjoyed, and those fucking crouching ones kind of ruined it. Fuck those guys.

Well, you know what you must do...

Stop watching/playing/reading zombie related media (ironically harder then you think).

Personally, no I'm not tired of zombies, but then again my only interest in Zombies comes from the old Dawn/Day of the dead films and Night of the living Dead remake, 28 days later and 28 weeks later, Resi games (which aren't entirely zombies) and Left 4 Dead games.

Haven't played Dead Rising or Dead Island, don't intend to. Dead Space was a bore to be honest as well. Other games with Zombies like Half Life and System Shock do it differently enough and sparingly enough not to "overuse" it.

If your feeling zombies are overused, that just means your overexposed. Stop entertaining the sub genre and find something else to waste time on.

Never! I <3 zombies when I wake up in the morning and I <3 zombies when I go to sleep. I haven't seen zombies done well for a couple years tho (L4D1&2) but hopefully Resident Evil 6 and Raccoon City will fix that.

I like my zombies dangerous and actually threatening, an infected cannibal sprinting at you legitimately feels dangerous unlike the shambling mass of "bwwaaaaaoooh...!"

so no, I like em, and I'm looking forward to what the future may bring us.^^

I think zombies are getting a bit overdone now.
I'm not saying I dont enjoy plugging zombies full of lead all day, but I think something else needs to come along. I dont find fighting robots as fun, though, as metalic pinging isnt as fun as squishing brains.

They just aren't ever done that well.

There are exceptions, though. One, really: RDR Undead Nightmare. The only truly decent zombie game.

There's no such thing as too much zombies and our society needs all the zombie-killing practice we can get! It's not a question of If the zombie apocalypse is coming, but WHEN the zombie apocalypse is coming...

*sleeps with crowbar on bedside*

I think more people are tired of the shitty zombie games then the actual zombies. We need something new in that field, I'll admit that much...

I love zombies, but then as I don't play a lot of zombie games, I haven't really had a chance to wear out on them. Plus, as I don't play FPS at all, I can stay fresh.
