I'm not saying that cartoons nowadays are bad, but they just aren't as fun (to me) as they used to be. It seems like networks are making shows for teenagers and forgetting about the initial audience for cartoon, kids. Have any of you ever seen or heard of the 'The Mask' cartoon series made back in '95? If you haven't, go on YouTube and look it up that was a great show. My problem is that cartoons aren't as zany as they once were. When I think of a cartoon from before 2000, i think of The Mask. Why? Because it had every single thing that made old '50's cartoons good and funny. I just miss how cartoons are made for teenagers and not kids, and that the cartoons aren't like thay were back in the 50's to 90's. Nothing was broken about the way cartoons like Looney Toons and The Mask worked, they were perfect and hilarious. But you know what crosses the line? The fact that over the years of new cartoons, not one of them has featured a falling piano, which is BULL*&^. Anyone else miss the way cartoons used to be?

Not so much. A lot of our attachment was nostalgia.

There really are a lot of solid children's cartoons still out there. My friend showed me a bunch of them.

And I don't miss falling pianos. I miss running off a cliff, hovering in place, looking down, and then falling.

I miss old cartoons. Not the ones you refer to specifically, but those still bring up nostalgia.

But it's not like they're gone, you can always rewatch them now. There'll be nothing new...but it's something.

I can't agree more.
But I have to agree with NinjaStova110, One advantage Cartoons get nowadays is that they know when a Cartoon is Kiddie-ish and when it's Childish, pointless, shitty slapstick violence-ish.

Definately. I still get a great laugh off of Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Ed, Edd and Eddy and all those.
They rarely occur on TV, but when they do I like to watch them with my littlesister (best excuse ever).

Nowadays everything Disney does is bad children sitcoms that makes your skin crawl. Seriously, TV entertainment for children has gone way down since back then.

Well see what I always remember when studying cartoons is that Walt Disney had the original formula, of setting up a gag and following through with it. There was no magic really just well placed humour and loveable characters. Then others made parodies of that (sorta like what Shrek did) and they became more popular. That's fine, that's a whole other form of cartoon, but what get's me then is that cartoons then made parodies of that...see I am Weasel, Cow and Chicken, Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob () and they just seem to do all these stupid ridiculous things that make me cringe. A parody of a parody hardly ever works unless the first parody was done badly...and in this case it wasn't.

i turned my back on cartoons the day cow and chicken was aired what the fuck happened

i pity kids today who don't have anything as cool or intelligent as Ulysses 51 or cities of gold
its all just irritating characters making loud noises with flashing lights these days.

sure some cartoons could be a bit preachy but damn it go listen to the Thundercats theme tune and tell me its not awesome.

even modern reboots of old cartoons are shite. new tom and jerry and new scooby doo are just awful compared to the real thing.

I think its insulting to this generation of kids to not give them something more engaging and that it seems to me that studios seem to think our kids are retarded now or something.

...and I realise how old that makes me sound lol

EDIT: yes johnny bravo was one of the last good toons :D

I thought this thread was done before already? Oh well.

Here's what I remember - Courage the Cowardly Dog, old Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Ed Edd n' Eddy, and Powerpuff Girls (Yes, I'm straight, male, and watched the Powerpuff Girls, STFU!) But I don't remember those anywhere near as fondly as Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry, those were the best. Looney Tunes just had some of the greatest cartoons ever, and Tom and Jerry was pure gold. I also remember Dragonball and Sailor Moon (many male kids still watched Sailor Moon, which seemed to blow the heads of all their fathers) and Reboot (sort of), but those are a different kind of cartoon.

Modern cartoons are just different. What people don't seem to think of when they look at stuff now, and look at stuff then, is that the only things they remember from then was the good stuff, and they're seeing a little bit of good stuff now and they're also seeing all the shit. They don't remember the old shit, just the old good stuff, so they think the old stuff was better because they don't remember the shit. Do you see what I'm saying? I can't think of a better way to say that.
its a good point there was some crap back then. but i haven't really seen anything good at all in recent years and regularly babysitting my sisters kids (5 & 9 yrs old) after school i watch a lot of stuff.

the only thing that comes to mind that is good and recent is Ooglies on BBC1 and thats not a cartoon but it did make me laugh my ass off at the evil pizza cutter and the Chav mobile phones :D

While I definitely miss the good 80's and 90's cartoons but who are we to judge the current cartoons just because we got nostalgias on our side? As long the children enjoy the shows then that should be enough since that what we got from our cartoons generation.
I do however watch some of the present day cartoons like Young Justice and Transformers Prime so they are not all bad.

I hear it's was nostalgia a lot, but I've gone back and watched many old shows I liked and compared them with newer stuff my brothers like. on the whole, 90s cartoons are better. Sure there was crap, but I'm just going off of what I thought was good at the time compared with what they like now. The only real let down was Ducktales. Gargoyles, Batman, Spiderman, X-men, and the Speilberg cartoons were far better than any references I got from my eight and ten year-old brothers. The Billionfold cartoons were alright, but that's pretty much it. None of them had dynamic characters or relationships. There's also the cartoon cartoons, but I kind of view those as between the generations.

So I'm only recalling the good and not the bad? like someone does with their memories of a dead loved one? Fitting, since some of the old stuff I liked is dead. I'll try to get used to it but I will always love the old cartoons and hate networks for getting rid of Johnny Bravo, Cow&Chicken, Reboot, Looney Toons, The Mask, and Dexter's Lab (the greatest fall of all)

I can't say that there are really any cartoon shows I miss (except pre-Scrappy Scooby-Doo; I watch it whenever its on and I'm in front of the TV). One thing I really liked was Calvin and Hobbes IMO one of the funniest cartoons ever made. I reckon one of the things I liked about it was the fact that Bill Watterson didn't allow it to be turned into a TV show; the voices of the characters are what you'd imagine them to be and the pictorial form I think makes it all the funnier. He also ended it in a really good way too. "Its a magical world". Its a shame it hasn't been made for so long, but it would have probably started stagnating and such.

defo i have a number of box sets of old toons and my nephew (5 yr old) always asks to watch thunder cats or jaycee and the wheeled warriors instead of the kids channels on sky when he comes round to stay

and for the record your making me feel old all the toons you guys are talking about I still consider "new" lol

Finneas and Ferb (sp?) my roommate watches and it's pretty damn good.

Spongebob has always had good moments.

Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy was always great, but I don't know if it's still on.

Chowder's alright.

While nothing is ever going to be as good to me as Loony Toons and Animaniacs, I accept that that is my nostalgia talking. Honestly though, when Animaniacs took time out to sing about the god damn capitals of the god damn states, or the god damn countries of the world, I would scream at the redundancy. I already go to school Animaniacs, if you're going to teach me don't beat me over the head with it, those segments were totally just shoved into the show as filler.
