Quite some time ago there was a controversy over a certain image that appeared in The Stanely Parable (for further info: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.831979-The-Stanley-Parable-Maker-Promises-to-Change-Racist-Image) but despite what the dev said the picture was never changed.

I was on the side of it not being changed so I was quite glad to see it never happen. However as of the 14th of July the game was finally edited, removing the offending image and replacing it with the orphan holding a flower.

So, what are your thoughts? Should he have changed it?

Really? The entire attitude towards racism against black people in america baffles me, there's nothing racist in this picture, it's a parody and doesn't have any actual slavery or offensive undertones.

Edit: You should add an option "No, there's nothing offensive about that, stop trying to start a flame war (pun intended)"
That would fall under the option 2 category. If that was felt to be inadequate, that's why there is the No (other) option.

I liked how The Stanley Parable just did its own thing without looking for anyone's acceptance (Unlike most games these days). Too bad he caved under the pressure.

I guess that now the world is less racist now? Good job whoever bothered complaining about this.

My general opinion on the whole situation is that he should've never even entertained changing it. Not only was the first image not offensive but the work was in my opinion, art. It used to be a game I really liked, but now it just reminds me of stupid political correctness. Sad thing is, even though I backed up a copy of the game before the update, Steam won't let me play the un-updated game.

I don't think he should have changed it simply because it's less funny, which makes the world a little bit sadder.

That said, if I had the SJWs after me, I'd just change the file rather than have to deal with their bullshit.

Wow, how unbelievably petty and pointless. It sounds like a joke, but no, people really will be offended by anything, and other people really do take this offense seriously enough to do something about it.

I'm not the sort of person to actually be angry or anything at the change, I don't really care that it was done, and I don't think it harms the game in any way, but seriously? Seriously?

I just find it funny.

I wouldn't have changed it myself because I'm a stubborn git and don't see anything wrong with it, but I understand that it's probably easier to just cave to these kinds of demands rather than actually bother fighting them, so whatever.

100% agree.

Watching it play out in the context of the game there are clearly no harmful racist intentions. I see no reason why this should be seen as something offensive. Of course, I've grown up without ever facing or even being in a room where others experienced serious racism in reality so perhaps I'm simply being insensitive.

As far as my life experiences are concerned...racism only exists on the internet via anonymous comments on places like youtube and trolling online gamers who escalate to racism after exhausting homophobic insults.

Right? Heck, I live in the US and it baffles me. Case in point: Resident Evil 4 is about shooting a bunch of Spaniards; no one bats an eye. Resident Evil 5 has black people, and suddenly all we're hearing about is the "controversy" of whether or not Capcom is racist.

This image and the discussion around it has clear parallels with the controversy surrounding Far Cry 4's cover. Neither image, in context, is racially offensive.

Really? I'd say something inflammatory in an interview over the "offending" work and harvest their fucking tears.

Different strokes, eh.

OT: I'm glad he neglected to change it. It's fine.

I'd just ignore them. But then again, I'm not a Facebook/Twitter user, which means I won't have to deal with people spamming my profile.

This media made me uncomfortable so I demand you change it! is a ridiculous argument in any form of artistic media and only seems to be taken to heart by creators in gaming and possibly some hollywood films.

I'm not offended by it. Other people were, and it's up to the creator to either agree with them and change it, find some middle ground, or stick to his/her guns. These are all acceptable approaches.

I'd argue that it's satirical enough to be more of a "making fun of racism/middle america" than trying to offend minorities. That's why I'm not offended and why I don't think it should have been changed.

I'm not sure what the context is....I assume its saterical (the absurdity come from how offensive it is), now is there a line between satire and reenforcing things? and when is it being crossed? I don't know

if most games did that (heh...which they don't) the games would probably be better....not that fans are always right but they seem to have more sense than the like of EA

sometime intentions are not enough

...your joking right? or...what? racism doesn't exist then? youre personal experience settles the matter?

You admit that you don't know the context with one breath and then applaud someone's opinion on the matter with the other?
