The Exile/Avernum series had some interesting race choices
Human: no special traits, but requires less experience to level up
Nephilim (cat people) - good with projectile weapons, disarming traps, and they get a dexterity boost. Requires more experience to level up than Humans, but less than Slithzerikai.
Slithzerikai (lizard people) - good with pole weapons (the most powerful 2-handed weapon type), gains a boost to strength and intelligence (magic), but requires the most experience to level up.
Having Slith or Nephilim in your party would occasionally have an effect on how people reacted to you (although this was rare, and rather minor). For example, a Nephilim camp might allow you to shop there if you have a Nephil in your party, or a group of humans might attack you if you have a Slith in your group.
