I'm never loud, but I think people should be allowed to be as loud as they like. People CAN sleep through anything, they just like to complain about it. People shouldn't have to be quiet.

Fuck noises. I think people should like, have to get a licensce before buying loud bass systems for their fucking dubstep electro shit. I mean seriously, I live on ground level, and I can still not sleep when the people 4 stories up have a party. AND THEY HAVE PARTIES EVERY WEEK! That's not cool. That's not expressing yourself. That's not living your life the way you want. That's just shit.

Loud music and parties I don't mind occasionally... but why the fuck must you blast out some shitty dance music everyday until 4am like my old neighbours did!?! I don't mind music at all, but why play it at it's loudest? It's just gonna deafen you and annoy your neighbours.

Everyone's allowed to let their hair down and be loud, or argue and you can't help having screaming kids but the fact some people don't even try to control it or even think of others makes me mad.
I'm a fairly quiet person so I'm sure I'm not a bad neighbour, but there's probably something I do that will annoy them >.<

Sounds like a nightmare. I don't think you'd be considered a bad person for complaining about her though. You may live next to other tenants, but that doesn't mean you have to hear every damn thing they do - piano or otherwise. You signed a contract that has a certain understanding that you are to live there peacefully anyway.

Don't feel bad, I recently moved and am the bottom tenant. I've since reported my upstairs neighbors 5-6 times to our complex's security in less than two weeks. They are the most obnoxious, annoying bunch of assholes I've encountered, which is a shame because the rest of the complex has been quite nice. It's been bad enough to merit having a notice on their door stating that, unless they improve their behavior, they're going to have an eviction notice filed against them.

Hopefully it comes to that - I really would like to see them kicked to the curb.

People owe you nothing. If you want some peace and quiet then you should go out of your way to get that, people aren't expected to be psychic and know exactly how much noise they should make to suit your activity.

Yeah, it's polite to keep the noise down but if you really can't stand someone else's activity getting in the way of your lunch or shit TV time then it's you that needs to drastically change.

Luckily, my apartment walls are quite thick and don't let out much noise. In addition to this, all the apartment layouts are 2 stories up or down. Which makes it practically impossible to know who your left/right/up/down neighbour really is, unless you've been inside their apartment and figured out if their stair goes up or down, left or right.

i live in apartment right now, its rather small so i know everyone by their name. if somebody is making a lot of noise i simply drop by and ask if they could be a little more quiet. works everytime.

but i guess it depends on what people you live with. a bunch of jackasses might be harder to deal with.

i think it is pretty much regulated by law, after xx hour eveyone has to be quiet. i also have heard that there are laws regarding playing hard music even during the day.

still, i think you should always calmly explain your situation say, two to three times, then you have every right to get angry and do the "I SMASH AAARGH!!!!111"

or call the police if you dont care about their well being.

I've had really noisy neighbours before, the worst was playing loud club music with his door open till 4am...despite people on the floor telling him to shut up.

I've never lived in an apartment, but I have lived in terrace housing. I was raised in it, and the rule was simple.

There is no point during the day in which our neighbours should be able to hear anything we say or do.

You don't disturb them, you keep the volume down, you don't air your dirty laundry enough that they can hear it. Inside your home is private and should be kept such.

My neighbours make a fair amount of noise, but to be honest, so do my roommates. I generally don't like noisy environments, but as long as it's between 8 am and 10 pm, all I can do is sigh, put on my headphones and attempt to ignore it.

I think you should be considerate of your neighbors, even outside of an apartment setting. It just works out better that way. Thankfully in my apartment building, everyone is pretty quiet. This is especially useful for me as I work overnights and sleep from 8am-4pm.

I'm pretty much used to my noisy neighbours. They have parties until 4AM, they are ALWAYS doing some form of DIY involving drills and hammers and their baby seems to cry non-stop. I live on the ground floor and they live one floor above, so they are always clambering up and down the stairs in the middle of the night. Luckily I am an insomniac, doesn't stop it from being annoying though!!

The way I see it, make as much noise as you want (within limits) in the daytime, but if it gets to the point where people are going to be sleeping, you need to shut the fuck up, or at least turn the volume down. I haven't experienced actual apartment living, but in my particular student accomodation we're all pretty considerate, with the exception of one foreign student, who decides to make tons of noise at 3AM and doesn't seem to operate on the same day and night cycle as the rest of us.

Actually, right now the guy from downstairs is scoring a lot of points by his choice of music. Whoah, who would have known. Usually it's always Dire Straits - Money for Nothing.

For the poll, I chose "I" - it's a give and take ;) (guitarist and father of a 10 month old)

The practicing the piano in the apartment is just inconsiderate. If you have to practice an instrument that possess no volume control, do it somewhere else.
I agree with you sir.
I think after 10pm to roughly 10am people should be very quiet, myself included. For the rest of the day, as long as it's not INCREDIBLY loud, things should be okay.

Dude, I think everyone has to be considerate. That means that every now and then you have to accept noise, and other times others have to respect privacy and quiet. If you can't bargain with them to reach some sort of balance they be dicks and it is best to move out, because nobody wants to live next to dicks. Of course you can become a dick yourself, but that increases the dick/nice ratio until we all drown in tidalwaves of cock.

I used to not give a single fuck about most noise. When I was a kid, my window was less than 50 meters from the train tracks, tram tracks, a busy intersection and a gas station. When I moved out and started college, my new appartment had a water heater that started up like somebody was firing a gun and it was in charge of heating my appartement and would fire up in the middle of the night.

However, I spent the last 5 years in a house on the outskirts of the city. It's the last house in a dead end street on a hill. My window looks out at a forest. The worst thing I have to endure are the crickets in the summer.

The thing is, my family will likely be selling the house in the forseeable future and I'll be moving back into the city. My noise tolerance is near to zero at this point and I'm genuinely worried about how I'll adjust. I'm a light sleeper by nature, so all I can do is pray I get a building with only boring old people...

Well right now I live in a loft apt above a coffee shop. I was told by the owner well in advance that they have live music (usually jazz) on Friday nights and the occasional Saturday. I don't mind that at all. In fact some weeks I go down to the shop and sit on my laptop and listen. The three or so bands they rotate in and out are all really good and it's always over around 11 or so.

That being said in my previous apartment there was a strictly enforced noise policy in the lease. The only time I had a problem there was when a rather urban couple moved in and thought blasting rap "music" at all hours was just the thing to do. Needless to say they lasted almost an entire month before they were evicted due to noise violations.

I've never lived in an apartment. However, If I ever DO live in an apartment I would very much enjoy quiet neighbors. While it's a bit off-subject; Every time a car drives down the street I live on with it's 'music' bumping and thumping away I just wish It would spontaneously combust.
that's what noise sensitive land mines are for, or a rocket launcher
