Guys I go to a weird school. Even though I am currently out of school I still see some people from it. Lot's of people at my school talk about "2012" and "WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE ANYWAY!" which annoys the hell outta me. The mayan calender is ending, that does not mean that WE WILL DIE! What are your thoughts about the "2012" talk?

Congratulations, you're one of the few people alive with 'common sense.' Please bare with those without it while you coast through life and try to ignore them.

Even the people who have been researching this crap for years say that the only prediction that can be discerned is the dawn of a new age.

Provided the Mayans really knew what the fuck was going to happen, there's no guarantee it will even be negative, let alone the end of the world.

Gear up like it's Y2K!

But no, nothing is going to happen, except I'm going to throw one badass party.

Tell them that what's happening was called the "Shift of Consciousness" by the Mayans, not the "end".

Unless they can find more proof other than "The Mayan calender ends here", I'm not going to believe it. How could they have predicted it? Unless they were a really advanced civilization who took all of their technology with them when they blasted off to the nearest planet that can support life (if such a thing exists, it would be quite aways away), and left only the ruins of their comparatively low-tech buildings. Unless they used magic...

People are crazy fanatics who believe for the sake of believing... Nothing more, and nothing less. They are crazy, but so long as there aren't too many, all they'll do is embarrass themselves.

2012 does not mean the end of the world in the mayan calender..

It means that there is going to be a great change in weather and so on, a new ice age if you like, that will start the era of a new age..

its not the end of the world, but the planet will go through such grave changes in a very short time that it will probably force the human race to start all over again..

They predicted the same thing some 6000 years ago or something, and they were quite on they money then.. Many places it froze so fast that live plants were captured inside the ice to be preserved to this very day..

Takes a look at my calendar.
OH SHIT THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH!
Ahem.
I think the mayan didn't figured out why they should make a calendar much longer.

The mayan calendar doesn't predict the end of the world, it just stops there, its the result of flawed mathamatics and tribal culture (and dipshits). Just slap those idiots and tell them they're stupid.

2012 is not even the correct year anyway: there's a mathematical error.

Source (since most of you probably don't understand Dutch I included the -terrible- google translation):
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.natutech.nl%2F00%2Fnt%2Fnl%2F47%2Fartikel%2F26050%2FBalen%3A_%25272012%2527_is_pas_over_twee_eeuwen.html

Andreas Fuls, who got his doctorate because of this at the Technical University of Berlin, pointed out that the previous GMT-correlation does not correspond with one of the Mayan documents on which the positions of Venus are written. More pieces of Mayan documents and props have been found since the last calculations. When Fuls processed all the new information, he found that the Mayan calendar was not supposed to end until 21st, 22nd or 23rd of December 2220.

It is absolute rubbish. It's just like that panic about the LHC a while back.

You sure they're not just, you know, joking around?

As in the following scenario:

Guy: [drunkenly] I...I really shouln't drinksh anymo. Ish can't be good for me.

Guy 2: [lifting beer bottle triumphantly] Hey buddy, live it up, we're all going to die in 2012 anyway!

PEOPLE ARE CRAZY! That's my short answer. Frankly, i'm getting a bit annoyed with the whole "end of the world" talk. I mean, World Wars 1 and 2 didn't cause the end of the world, now did they? And those were much more serious events than "year 2K" or "Large Hadron Collider" or some other piece of pseudo-threatening crap du-jour.

That's good, the idiots of the future will debate it then!
This 2012 business is really pissing me off, because some people are actually believing this crap. My roommate was even worried about it, but she was pretty dumb anyway, heh.
