while all this 2012 crap is gloom and doomists nonsense and nonsensical alarmist rantings..... I do fear that day. Or more accurately the day before. For all the hundreds possibly thousands of people running around like its two for one at krispy kreme. Sigh

Nah, basically every generation since the dawn of mankind has predicted some sort of apocalypse and, like this one, there are always gonna be people who believe it. Humanity is obsessed with its own mortality.

So if my Calendar ends what happens? I BUY A NEW ONE! It's just the end of a damn calendar, not the end of the world.

The book about Mayan mythology I read said the mayans had cycles of years. After every x amount of years (I don't remember the number) the gods take stock and judge humans. If we pass things roll on as usual, if we fail the gods hit the all powerful reboot button on the physical world. 2012 is just the cycle ending (if their times have been translated to the Julian Calendar properly)

2012 is not even the correct year anyway: there's a mathematical error.

Source (since most of you probably don't understand Dutch I included the -terrible- google translation):
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.natutech.nl%2F00%2Fnt%2Fnl%2F47%2Fartikel%2F26050%2FBalen%3A_%25272012%2527_is_pas_over_twee_eeuwen.html

Andreas Fuls, who got his doctorate because of this at the Technical University of Berlin, pointed out that the previous GMT-correlation does not correspond with one of the Mayan documents on which the positions of Venus are written. More pieces of Mayan documents and props have been found since the last calculations. When Fuls processed all the new information, he found that the Mayan calendar was not supposed to end until 21st, 22nd or 23rd of December 2220.
There's that and they ran out of stones.
I'm serious about the second point.
They left because of something, and didn't have rocks large enough to carve things into.

Why do I care said:
Guys I go to a weird school. Even though I am currently out of school I still see some people from it. Lot's of people at my school talk about "2012" and "WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE ANYWAY!" which annoys the hell outta me. The mayan calender is ending, that does not mean that WE WILL DIE! What are your thoughts about the "2012" talk?
In a sense they are right. We ARE all going to die anyway....most likley not all at the same time, but certainly at some point down the road. One day you too will probably seriously contemplate your own mortality and search for answers to questions you don't yet think about. It's true, humans are or eventually are facinated by im/mortality, and everyone at one point or another, to some extent or another, face this issue within themselves.

My thoughts are this: If that Mayans were SO GOOD at predicting the future, why the hell didn't they see that spanish ass whoopin coming?

Thus, they cannot trusted.

I highly doubt the world will ever go out in a sudden apocalypse, but I do wonder what is going to happen with overpopulation and resources running out.

Penn and Teller did a Bullshit on this and brought up a great idea...

Open a loan company quickly, and offer any believers $2000 for their home, which only changes hands on 22 December 2012, you get a pile of cash to spend on drugs and hookers to enjoy before we're wiped out, and if by some miraculous chance it doesn't happen, we get a bunch of properties to sell on at about 99% profit and you get to find a dumpster to live in for believing in fuckwitted stuff.

After all, if it's real, does it matter that you lost a pile of sets of $2000? money won't exist, and we'll all be raiding soda machines for bottlecaps.

The same thing happened at my school. I'm glad this whole thing came up last year though, because I'm not in school anymore. I can't imagine what people like you have to put up with listening to.

But yeah, nothings going to happen. It's just like Y2K (only more retarded). I'll enjoy watching everyone panic and then laugh in their face when they realize that they spent the last two or three years acting like a fool.

I believe that anyone who thinks 2012 will happen is a dead-set fucking idiot. There is no justification for you to believe in that crap. If one of my friends told me they believed in it, I would no longer be friends with them, because of how ludicrous that is.

I personally have been taking steps to lessen the blow having been sacrificing post men on the ziggurat in my Back yard for the last five years! As a plus on the side I have not had a bill for anything in five years!

Congratulations, you're one of the few people alive with 'common sense.' Please bare with those without it while you coast through life and try to ignore them.
I'd have thought common sense would dictate using the search bar to see if this has been done before. ;)
